There’s More Hope For A Chrono Trigger Remake Than There Was Before

Chrono Trigger turned 30 last summer. It’s still one of the greatest games ever made but its owners Square Enix don’t do much with it. You can buy a remastered version of the original on Steam, and sometimes it’s on sale, but otherwise not much has been done to keep it in the public consciousness. A remake might do wonders to boost it up. Is Square thinking about one or not? Fans were given new hope from Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, who played a role in the development of the action RPG. When he was asked point blank in a discussion video last Sunday if a Chrono Trigger remake was in development or at least in consideration, he had a weird reaction. There was no blunt “no,” or “I’ve heard nothing,” or even the standard “We have nothing to announce at this time,” which is the typical deflection for a question like this. Instead Horii got nervous, and gave the responses “I can’t say,” “You shouldn’t ask that!” and “I’ll get told off!” Note to all our readers: if you ever find yourself under NDA, this is not how you answer a question about the thing you signed a […]

I actually laughed when I saw Horii’s answers. That was not the face of a man who is free to speak. I get that this is not confirmation, but it made me feel like maybe the higher-ups finally understand how much potential they are wasting. Chrono Trigger is one of the few older RPGs that people from completely different generations enjoy. If they remake it, I want them to put their best writers and designers on it. No rushed deadlines, no confusing creative decisions, just a faithful rebuild with small improvements. If they do that, I think it will do well.

If Square Enix is really planning this, I hope they stay close to the DS version. That version felt clean, simple, and respectful to the original. A remake that tries to reinvent everything is going to frustrate long-time players. I know modern graphics could make the environments beautiful, but what matters to me is the flow of the combat and how the characters interact. The charm came from how straightforward the game was. I want an update, not a reinvention.

I think people are reading too much into his body language. Developers deal with NDA questions all the time, and some of them just freeze up because they don’t want to mess up. For all we know, nothing is happening. And even if something is, remakes take years. I’m keeping my expectations neutral. If Square announces something, great. If not, I’m fine replaying the original on PC.

I really want to see a remake, but only if the right team works on it. Chrono Trigger’s strength comes from its pacing and how tightly everything fits together. If they stretch it out or add filler, it will lose impact. Horii’s reaction gives me hope, but I’m keeping myself grounded. Still, it feels like the closest thing to a hint we’ve had in a long time. If they are doing it, I want to see a respectful update that keeps the spirit of the original intact.

I’ve played Chrono Trigger more times than I can count, and the idea of a proper remake actually excites me. The ports are okay, but none of them really capture the feeling of playing it fresh for the first time. I think Square has the resources, but they’ve made some questionable decisions lately. If they put real effort into graphics, music, and gameplay balance, it could become a classic for a new generation. But I worry that if they rush it, it might just feel like another “remaster with small changes” situation. I hope they take their time because the original deserves that level of care.

Honestly, I didn’t expect a remake to even be possible, so hearing that there might be hope is kind of thrilling. Chrono Trigger has this timeless quality that’s hard to describe, and I’d love to see it polished with modern visuals without losing its charm. Even just imagining the music fully orchestrated makes me smile. I know Square Enix has been hit or miss with remakes, so I’m cautiously optimistic. A lot could go wrong, but the potential here is huge.

I’m excited by this possibility, but also skeptical. Square Enix has a habit of teasing things and then doing very little. Still, the reaction from Yuji Horii feels like more than coincidence. It’s almost like he was trying not to confirm it, but the nervousness says a lot. I think fans should temper their expectations, but the fact that there’s even a hint is enough for me to get hopeful.

I just can’t stop thinking about how amazing it would be to see Chrono Trigger with modern graphics and maybe some quality-of-life improvements. I’d love things like a smoother battle system or better inventory management, but the story and characters can’t change. That’s what would make it special. Honestly, I might pre-order it just to support them, because this game deserves the attention.

I’m a bit older, so Chrono Trigger is like nostalgia on steroids for me. The idea of a remake makes me a little nervous because sometimes updates ruin what made a game great. But if Square does it right, it could be incredible. I hope they involve people who understand why the game is loved rather than just trying to sell it to new players.
