Ten years ago, Boom Studios started printing a comic revival of Jem and the Holograms. For those unaware, Jem was pretty much the KPop Demon Hnnters of the 1980s: the musical adventures of a glamorous girl band, though in Jem’s case she never went monster hunting. Jem’s real identity was Jerrica Benton, teen heiress of a technology company who possessed a set of technologically advanced earrings that would holographically project her band’s stage outfits onto them, hence their name. And instead of the Saja Boys she had to deal with the Misfits, whose music was much better and were going to get her. The comic revival of Jem did not use the same continuity as the original, but told a brand new story with rebooted, redesigned versions of the characters: they called it “The Encore Era.” Written by Kelly Thompson and drawn by Sophie Campbell, it hung around quite a while and attracted people who didn’t necessarily grow up with Jem as kids.
