Once upon a time in the late 2000s, James Cameron was at his table staring at two potential projects. One was an adaption of the manga Battle Angel Alita, and the other was kinda like the 1990 Kevin Costner movie Dances With Wolves only it was in outer space. Cameron ended up picking the latter project, and gave the former to his director friend Robert Rodriguez. Avatar made a billion dollars, while Alita: Battle Angel didn’t make quite that many. Thing is, though, I don’t feel like I’ve ever run into a truly rabid fan of Avatar, while vocal stans for Alita: Battle Angel are still everywhere. It seems like every now and then we hear about a potential second Alita film, but never anything concrete. What we’re about to share isn’t concrete either, but it’s solid enough to drive on. The magazine Empire asked Cameron about the status of this long-rumored sequel. I always found it interesting that Avatar earned more money, yet Alita inspired more dedicated fans. That alone tells me there is value in continuing the series. Cameron mentioning that he and Rodriguez made a promise shows that the property still has a place in their plans. I am also thinking about the technology available now compared to 2019. They could recreate Rosa’s performance with even more precision. I only hope the sequel keeps the emotional weight of the first film. I do not need a giant franchise. I just want a story that respects the character and finishes what it started.

I keep wondering if a sequel is even possible at this point. Rosa is already in her 40s, and that makes me think about how they plan to handle her appearance. Alita has a very youthful look, and part of the character’s appeal comes from that contrast between her innocent face and her strength. I am not saying Rosa cannot play the role again. She gave an excellent performance, and her facial expressions were a big part of why the character worked. But the filmmakers will need to rely more on digital adjustments now, and that can be risky if it becomes too noticeable. I want the sequel, but I also want it to look natural. I hope Cameron and Rodriguez already have a clear solution for this, because waiting this long has created a real challenge.

For me, the bigger question is whether the story will follow the manga more closely this time. The first film changed some things, and I hope they adjust the tone and world-building. I also want Motorball to be more intense. If Cameron is serious, then maybe we will finally get something that pushes the action further.

Rosa Salazar should return no matter what. Her acting gave the character life. I do not want a recast. De-aging does not worry me because her appearance is already stylized. I am more concerned about the writing. The first film ended right when things became interesting, and it felt incomplete. If Cameron and Rodriguez are serious, they should focus on giving Alita a purpose beyond revenge. She needs challenges that test her humanity, not just her combat ability. If they get that right, the sequel will feel more meaningful.

I am trying not to get too excited. Cameron is known for juggling many projects, and sometimes everything takes forever. But the part about him moving near Rodriguez makes things sound more practical. Collaboration is easier when the two creators can meet without flying across the country. I think the sequel only works if they keep the same visual team. The first movie had a style that felt unique, especially in the facial animation. They should maintain that consistency. I also hope they give more focus to the supporting characters like Ido. He had strong emotional weight in the first film.

I am not sure about the release timeline, but I think 2026 might be when we finally hear something official. If they show even a teaser image, fans will react immediately.
