Last January toy company Jazwares announced they were pushing a new line of Stranger Things merch into stores that fall, and described plans for figures and playsets but didn’t show much of it. Now the ad showing off that line is making the rounds on television, and like we figured, most of it is based on Season 5. In the ad, two kids enter a room full of Jazwares products, like the Squishmallows they showed us earlier, and start taking figures off the shelves and playing around with them. “Recreate iconic scenes, or make new unforgettable moments!” says the announcer, while the Eleven figure slams the Demogorgon figure inside some kind of makeshift Upside Down cage. Wait a minute…”iconic scenes”? This scene hasn’t even happened yet! The cage’s door is covered in Christmas lights. Why would they need to do that in the Upside Down? Once the Demo is in there, these plastic fire-looking things shoot up, implying the intent was to burn it. We definitely haven’t seen this trap before. This ad hammers home how integral the WSQK radio station will be to the final season, because most of the playsets are based on it. There’s a van with […]

When I saw the cage with Christmas lights, my first thought was that they are showing a real plot point too early. I do not believe the lights are just for decoration. They look like they are part of a system to contain something dangerous. The idea of fire rising from the floor also suggests the group is experimenting with very direct methods. I feel curious, but also confused, because the Upside Down does not seem like a place where Christmas lights would function. It makes me think the scene is not in the Upside Down at all, but a location made to look similar.

I focus mostly on character details, and the thing that stands out to me is Dustin’s shirt. The Hellfire Club symbol under his jacket is a strong personal choice for him, and I appreciate that they kept it for the figure. It feels respectful to Eddie and consistent with Dustin’s emotional arc. The toys also make me notice the simple problem of making Will and Mike recognizable. Their hairstyles really are too close. If the toys cannot differentiate them, it tells me the show might need to rethink their visual identities.

The WSQK playset interests me most. When a company spends resources building a full set, including an Upside Down basement, it usually means that location matters in the story. I imagine the station acting as a communication center for the group. It might also be a place where something breaks through unexpectedly. Even if a portal does not open there, I expect the basement to serve a purpose. For me, the attention given to this location is the strongest hint in the entire advertisement.
