Kneel Before Grodd In ‘DC Crime,’ Hosted By Jimmy Olsen

You never know what to expect next from James Gunn, the current head of Warner Bros’ DC Cinematic Universe. It’s become clear he is NOT going to repeat the same straightforward path that Disney took with Marvel – each announcement has been wildly different than the one before: a Superman “sequel” that isn’t one, a Robin movie with puppets, an R-rated Clayface horror film. And this, this is surely something no one’s tried: DC Crime, a “true crime” documentary series hosted by the Daily Planet’s Jimmy Olsen. Variety broke the story. Superman’s co-worker and pal will be portrayed by Skyler Gisondo, the same actor who played him in lat summer’s Superman movie. And Olsen’s subject for the first season will be the notorious criminal, supervillain and superintelligent primate, Gorilla Grodd. Being a giant gorilla used to bar you from appearing in Hollywood adaptions of comic books, as there was no way to not make it look silly, and “comics are serious business.” But as men in monkey suits gave way to CGI, a path forward for Grodd became possible, and he started appearing in more DC adaptions both animated and live-action. We’ve technically already seen him in the Gunnverse as […]

I honestly didn’t expect Jimmy Olsen to get his own show, let alone hosting a true crime series. Using Grodd as the first subject is such a strange but interesting choice. It seems like they are leaning into both comedy and seriousness at the same time. I am curious how they will balance a super-intelligent gorilla with the conventions of a true crime format. If the show can pull it off without looking ridiculous, it could be something completely unique. Skyler Gisondo returning as Olsen is smart because it keeps continuity with the Gunnverse. I am looking forward to seeing how the CGI for Grodd holds up in a documentary style. The fact that they got people from American Vandal also makes me think it will be clever and sharp, not just silly.

Using Jimmy Olsen as the host is unexpected, but it works in a way because he has always been the more approachable character in Superman stories. Grodd being the first criminal subject is hilarious, but it could also make for some interesting social commentary if done right. I hope they keep the tone similar to a real documentary and not overdo the jokes. Seeing Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda involved makes me optimistic, because their style tends to mix humor and detail in a smart way. I am waiting for more news on HBO Max because I would really like to watch this when it comes out.

This is exactly the kind of experimentation that the Gunnverse seems to thrive on. I like that they are trying to do something different from Marvel’s approach, and turning Grodd into a true crime subject is unexpected in a fun way. It will be interesting to see how they integrate CGI with the documentary style, especially if it’s meant to feel like American Vandal. I also think bringing Skyler Gisondo back gives a sense of continuity and helps viewers connect with Olsen as a character. I hope the episodes are not too short; this concept deserves time to explore the story and Grodd’s character properly.

I find it both funny and fascinating that DC is exploring this kind of meta approach. Having a “supervillain crime story” through the lens of a human host feels very unique. Jimmy Olsen is usually the comic relief, so turning him into the central storyteller adds a layer of novelty. I wonder if the series will delve into Grodd’s intelligence or focus more on his crimes. The choice of writers who did American Vandal gives me confidence that the show will have a satirical edge, which is necessary for a story like this to succeed.

I think this project could easily go wrong, but the people involved make me feel hopeful. Jimmy Olsen is a relatable character, and Skyler Gisondo is capable of making him feel grounded. Grodd as a criminal in a mockumentary format is absurd, yet it might work because Gunn is not afraid to take risks. The involvement of experienced true crime parody writers is smart. I just hope the show does not rely too heavily on jokes at the expense of story, because the premise itself could sustain both humor and intrigue.

This is the strangest idea I have heard recently, but that does not make it bad. DC Crime could become something very innovative, blending superhero stories with documentary storytelling. Using Grodd is a bold choice, and I like that it will not feel like a standard adaptation. The mockumentary style allows for creativity, and I think Skyler Gisondo can carry the hosting role well. I am very curious how they will handle CGI Grodd interacting with Olsen in a believable way, and whether it will focus on his crimes or his personality.

I am not entirely sure how I feel about a gorilla being the subject of a crime documentary, but it is intriguing. Jimmy Olsen hosting is unusual, but it makes sense because he is the audience-friendly character of the DC world. This project might appeal to people who like a mix of humor and storytelling. I am especially interested to see how the writers from American Vandal manage the tone. It could be funny, clever, and slightly dark at the same time. If done right, DC Crime could feel fresh compared to other superhero content.
