Yup, Disney+ Is No Longer Financing Doctor Who

This may be the most unsurprising entertainment news of the year, but the BBC in England has at last confirmed what everyone figured out already: the Doctor Who partnership with Disney+ hasn’t worked out, and they’ll be continuing production some other way. They are down but not out. Everyone was expecting DW to go on one of its extended breaks, but the current plan is to get a Christmas special out in time for next year: “The BBC remains fully committed to Doctor Who, which continues to be one of our most loved dramas, and we are delighted that Russell T Davies has agreed to write us another spectacular Christmas special for 2026. We can assure fans, the Doctor is not going anywhere, and we will be announcing plans for the next series in due course which will ensure the TARDIS remains at the heart of the BBC.” I’ve never been much of what you’d call a Whovian, but I started following the series regularly once the Disney+ version started. I was immediately impressed with the new Tennant and Tate episodes that opened it. I loved Ruby Sunday and her infectious enthusiasm for traveling time and space. The first “new” […]

Honestly, I’m not surprised by this at all. Disney+ has high expectations for everything they touch, and Doctor Who was never going to be a massive hit like the Marvel series or Star Wars. The first season was fine, I guess, especially with Tennant and Tate coming back, but the second season completely fell apart. The finale was a mess. If you’ve been watching Doctor Who for a long time, you know that sometimes the show can be messy, but that finale wasn’t just a little messy—it was a disaster. I hope it gets back on track with the BBC, but honestly, I’m not sure it will be the same again after this.

It’s a shame that the Disney+ partnership didn’t work out, but I can see why it didn’t. The show wasn’t designed to be a mega-hit, but Disney treated it like one. You can’t just force Doctor Who into that mold. It’s always had a niche fan base, and that’s what’s made it special. The new direction, especially with the second season, felt like they were trying too hard to appeal to a wider audience. It didn’t resonate the way I hoped, and the messy finale sealed the deal. Now, I’m wondering how the BBC will move forward without that kind of budget behind it.

Honestly, I’m a little relieved the partnership is over. I think Disney was trying to change too much about the show to fit their needs. Doctor Who has always been this quirky, unpredictable show, and when Disney tried to make it more mainstream, it lost some of its heart. The second season didn’t help—everything felt rushed and all over the place. If it goes back to its roots at the BBC, I’ll be more optimistic. But I hope they don’t try to force another big, expensive project that doesn’t fit the show’s style.

Doctor Who has always been very British, and that’s part of its charm, but it’s also what limits its global appeal. The humor, the slang, the references—it’s all very tied to British culture, and that’s hard for international audiences to relate to. I think when Disney tried to make it more universal, they missed the point of what made the show unique in the first place. It’s like trying to turn a British sitcom into an American one; it loses something along the way. I don't think it’s necessarily a bad thing, though—it’s just that Doctor Who might be better as a niche show rather than trying to cater to the entire world. It’s always had a very specific audience, and maybe it should stick to that.

It feels like the Disney+ Doctor Who was a half-hearted attempt to turn a cult classic into a mainstream hit, and it didn’t work. I liked the first season well enough, especially with Tennant and Tate, but that second season was just chaotic. The finale was confusing and didn’t tie things up properly. I really hope the BBC can find its footing again and not just try to make Doctor Who bigger than it needs to be. It’s always been a show about heart, not spectacle, and that’s what made it special. Let’s see where they take it from here.
