Many have tried, all have failed. But IDW has announced at long last, they’ve figured out what the military, the scientists and Ghidora never could: how to kill Godzilla, King of the Monsters. And they’ll do it in only the sixth issue of their new Godzilla ongoing series, due out in 2026. The idea was tought up by current series writer Tim Seeley and artist Nikola Čižmešija, and they’re not sharing HOW Godzilla will meet his end, but the variant covers below could give a clue. And the icing on the cake? A cover by Dan Jurgens, the artist of the cover for the iconic “Death Of Superman” issue. He’s created a homage with Godzilla lying in front of a tattered cape instead (but where did the cape come from?) “When the good folks at IDW asked about the possibility of a special ‘Death of Godzilla’ cover that would play off the iconic cover that Brett Breeding and I did for Superman #75, I was definitely up for it,” says Jurgens. ”I’ve always been a fan of the big guy but hadn’t had a chance to draw him so this was the perfect way to scratch that itch. It was great […]

I have to say, the idea of killing Godzilla in just six issues is shocking. I grew up reading about him being unstoppable, and it feels almost wrong to imagine him gone so quickly. But the concept of him returning as Kai-Sei Energy Godzilla sounds intriguing. It could allow the story to explore more cosmic or elemental powers instead of just physical fights. I am curious how Tim Seeley and Nikola Čižmešija will make this feel meaningful rather than just a gimmick. If done right, it could add a new layer to Godzilla’s mythology and make fans rethink what makes him such a legendary character.

I am skeptical about this “death” thing. Comic deaths rarely last, and IDW even admits it. But what interests me is how they are framing Godzilla’s next phase as pure energy. That could make him more unpredictable and give the artists and writers room to explore imaginative battles and storytelling. It might actually feel fresh instead of just repeating the same monster fights we’ve seen for decades.

I think paying homage to Superman #75 is smart. Comic fans love connections like that. Even if Godzilla’s death is temporary, having such a dramatic cover sets the tone. It makes me excited to see the story unfold, and I am curious how the tattered cape plays into the narrative. Maybe it will hint at new allies or enemies in this energy form.

I am surprised they decided to kill Godzilla so early in the series. It is bold, and I can respect that. The idea of Godzilla returning as a being of pure energy opens the door for new conflicts that feel larger than life. If they pull it off, it could redefine what we expect from monster comics. I will definitely be checking it out.

The concept of Kai-Sei Energy Godzilla is fascinating. I have always enjoyed when creators take familiar characters and transform them into something new. It could make for intense visual storytelling, especially with the dynamic art that Nikola Čižmešija brings. I hope the story gives Godzilla a clear emotional arc, not just flashy battles.

I feel like this series could either be amazing or completely over-the-top. Killing Godzilla so soon is a gamble, but it might pay off if the new energy form is treated with care. I like that IDW is willing to take risks and experiment with mythology that is almost 70 years old. It could bring new fans while still honoring long-time readers.
