Last weekend’s Gamescom event came with a new look at Yooka-Replaylee, Playtonic Games’ effort to address criticism over the initial release of Yooka-Laylee and deliver what they hope is a more crowd-pleasing 3D platform adventure. (For the record, I liked it the first time.) The trailer is a short one, but ends with a pledge to reveal more on August 29, which we hope includes the release date. If they actually want this out within 2025, like they’ve been saying, they need to get cooking. The new info we do have is in regards to the physical releases. Yooka-Replaylee will be physical on Playstation 5, XBox Series X and Nintendo Switch 2, and get this: the Switch 2 cart WILL HAVE THE FULL GAME! It is NOT a game key-card, like we’ve see so many other third-party devs resort to. Amazon lists the game as coming out “December 31, 2025” but this is likely a placeholder. MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN EVER – With an art and animations overhaul and enhanced performance and resolution, the favourite buddy duo has never looked or moved better. NEW AND IMPROVED CHALLENGES – Improvements to existing in-game challenges and many entirely new challenges to discover and undertake! NEW […]

I always felt the original game had charm, even if many people said it was too rough. Seeing this new version makes me very happy, especially because Playtonic seems to listen to feedback. The camera and controls were the biggest issues for me before, and now they are putting real effort to fix those. That already makes it worth another try. What excites me the most is the orchestral soundtrack. Grant Kirkhope and David Wise together is something I never get tired of. Their music shaped my childhood, and hearing it with full orchestra feels like a dream. Also, the fact that the Switch 2 physical release has the whole game on the cart is huge. I hate when companies only give you half a game and force you to download the rest. This is proper respect for the players. If they release this in 2025, I will absolutely get it on launch day.

I think this is what the first game should have been. Many people complained about controls and camera, and it looks like now they listened. The new move set sounds good, because I did not enjoy when the actions felt broken apart. The new map and tracker also sound helpful, because in the past I wasted too much time running around not knowing where to go.

Honestly, I was one of the few who enjoyed Yooka-Laylee from the start. Still, I am glad to see they are giving it another chance with improvements. The announcement about the new collectible currency made me smile. It is small, but it gives me hope that they are adding fun reasons to keep exploring. I also like the detail about Vendi selling new merchandise. It adds personality and humor. I am not a collector of physical games, but the fact that the full version is on the Switch 2 cart shows respect. I think other developers should take notes.

I feel mixed. On one hand, I want to support Playtonic, because I love 3D platformers and not many studios make them anymore. On the other hand, I worry this is just the same game but dressed nicer. They say there are new challenges and tweaks, but how different will the full experience feel? Still, I think the physical release shows commitment. I will probably wait until the August 29 showcase before deciding if I will buy it.

The first Yooka-Laylee disappointed me, but this new trailer and the details they gave are interesting. The world map system sounds like the best change. I remember getting lost too often before, which made me quit. If they really made exploring smoother, then maybe I will give it another chance.

The best part of this update for me is the Switch 2 cartridge. I am tired of buying physical games that just include a download code. It feels like cheating. Finally, here is a company doing it right. I do not even own a Switch 2 yet, but knowing this makes me want one more.

For me, the new art and animations are what stand out. The characters always had personality, but the visuals felt outdated in the first release. If this version looks more polished, then it finally feels like the Banjo successor many hoped for. I want platformers to look fun and full of life, and this direction gives me confidence.

I am not that interested in the physical release, but the gameplay changes sound good. Being able to combine moves more fluidly is important. I stopped playing the first version because the controls felt stiff. If they managed to fix this, then it changes everything.
