This fall the Chainsaw Man series will premiere its first fully original feature-length film, Chainsaw Man The Movie: Reze Arc. But before then, two compilation films comprised of the first season will make their Western debut on the Crunchyroll app. These compo films have never before been released outside of Japan and, in fact, DO contain some new content in the form of Chainsaw Days, an adaptation of the original manga’s bonus episodes. Both films will go live on the service sometime in September (the specific date has not been revealed). Chainsaw Man takes place in a dark world where creatures known as Devils are spawned from the collective fears and negative thoughts of humanity. Someone’s gotta hunt them, and that guy was fearless teenager Denji — until he died. For a few minutes anyway — he found a way to cling to life by merging with his pet Devil Pochita. That act transformed him into the powerful Chainsaw Man. Now Denji can sprout chainsaws from any part of his body to instantly puree any monster in his path. The series stars Kikunosuke Toya as Denji, Shiori Izawa as Pochita, Tomori Kusunoki as Makima, Shogo Sakata as Aki Hayakawa, Fairouz […]

I am very excited to see the compilations come to Crunchyroll. I already watched the first season when it aired, but I think these films will help me refresh the story before the Reze arc movie arrives. I also like that they added Chainsaw Days. For me, bonus episodes make the characters feel more human and less like just action figures. Denji is such a simple person, but his bond with Pochita really touched me the first time I saw it. Sometimes I even think about how I would act if I had a partner like Pochita. The whole idea of devils coming from human fears is also very creative, and it makes me reflect on what my own fears could become. I think these compilation movies are not only good for old fans, but also for people who missed the first season. They can watch the story in a shorter format and understand why Chainsaw Man became so popular worldwide. I will watch both parts as soon as they release.

I feel happy that the English cast is coming back. Ryan Colt Levy did a very good job as Denji. He made the character sound believable as a boy who suffers, dreams, and still tries to laugh. Sometimes I prefer subs, sometimes I prefer dubs, but in this case I enjoyed both. Suzie Yeung as Makima also impressed me because she gave the character a soft but commanding tone. I know people usually discuss story and animation, but voice acting matters a lot. These films are also a chance for the dub team to reach more audiences who may not follow Japanese voices.

I started Chainsaw Man because of the hype. At first, I did not understand why people called it different. After finishing season one, I understood. The violence is shocking, but what stays with me is how unpredictable it feels. Denji is not a classic hero. He makes selfish choices, but that is what makes him realistic. The compilations arriving on Crunchyroll are perfect timing. I can watch again with my friends who missed the first season. Maybe then they will join me when the Reze arc film releases in theaters. For me, this is about sharing something I enjoy with others.

I am not sure if I want to rewatch a story I already know. I feel like the studio could have spent more time promoting the Reze Arc movie instead. I understand that some fans like to revisit the first season, but I personally prefer moving forward. Unless Chainsaw Days content is more than just a small bonus, I might skip these films and wait for the Reze release directly.
