Crunchyroll has laid out their entire plans for Anime Expo next month. They expect to host nine panels in total, each spotlighting one of their most anticipated offerings for the next few months. Here’s what you need to know… The Internet works in a peculiar way; in one corner, seven million people may have heard of something while in another corner, virtually no one has. Today is the first time I’ve heard about Let’s Play, an American webcomic that’s being turned into a Japanese anime — the first such crossover to happen. apparently it ran from 2016 to 2022, first on Deviantart and then on Webtoon. Creator Leeanne M. Krecic was personally involved in the anime’s production and OLM (Pokémon, Berserk) made the animation. Krecic (who’s better known online as “Mongie”) will be part of the Anime Expo panel revealing the show, along with director Daiki Tomiyasu. The Let’s Play panel takes place Thursday, July 3 in the Platinum Ballroom at the JW Marriott, and after that, there’ll be panels for The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 4 (with the Japanese voice of Naofumi and producer Ten Kimura) and Solo Camping for Two (with voice actors Daiki Hamano and […]

I’m very interested in how “Let’s Play” is being adapted into anime form. As someone who’s read the webcomic on Webtoon, I always felt it had potential for animation, but I never imagined a Japanese studio like OLM would take it on. That’s huge. I wonder how the humor and pacing will translate, since webcomic storytelling feels different from traditional anime. Also, having the original creator involved gives me more confidence in the final product. It’s encouraging to see Crunchyroll giving space to this kind of crossover at Anime Expo.

Honestly, I don’t get the hype around “Let’s Play.” Webcomics being made into anime seems more like a business move than an artistic one. Anime Expo used to focus on Japanese titles, but now it’s starting to feel like a marketing convention. Where’s the focus on animators, composers, and people behind the scenes? I’ll still check out Shield Hero and Dr. Stone panels, though. At least those are from people who’ve proved their work.

This looks super fun! I’m already planning my days around the panels. I love Frieren and Dr. Stone so much, and seeing the voice actors live is such a cool thing. I didn’t know “Let’s Play” was being turned into anime, but now I want to read the webcomic. The fact that the original creator is part of the panel makes it sound serious. I hope they show a trailer!

I just want to see the new Shield Hero content. I don’t follow webcomics or new adaptations much, but Season 4 is something I’ve been waiting for. Hopefully they talk about the story direction and not just merchandise.

This is my first year following Anime Expo news. I just started watching anime during the pandemic. It’s a little overwhelming with so many panels, but I like how Crunchyroll is organizing everything. I might watch “Let’s Play” because the story sounds different from typical anime. I also appreciate how they’re including both famous titles and new ones.
