I watched Pawn last year after a friend suggested it. I wasn't expecting much at first, yet it hooked me right in. Doo-Seok's slow metamorphosis from a vicious loan shark to someone who cares deeply about Seung-Yi felt extremely real. It was more than simply a good story; it got me thinking about what makes up a family. The mother's condition was just dreadful. She openly revealed her anguish and helplessness as an undocumented immigrant. I believe the film did an excellent job of portraying the difficult choices that people face in real life.

Just to kill time, my sister and I watched this movie, but I was pleasantly pleased. I initially chuckled when Doo-Seok claimed to be a financier since it made him seem sophisticated, even though he was actually a loan shark. However, things quickly became serious. I was deeply affected by the incident in which they seized the girl as "collateral." I initially thought, "What are these folks doing? However, toward the end, I came to like them. On an emotional level, it was quite perplexing. Park So-Yi is simultaneously forceful and endearing. Although I didn't weep, I nearly did.

This movie broke my heart in the best way. I know it’s fiction, but it didn’t feel like it. The pain the mother felt when she had to leave her daughter with strangers just so she wouldn’t get deported? That was too real. I have family who also went through immigration struggles, so this one hit close. The chemistry between Seung-Yi and Doo-Seok warmed me up. It was like watching strangers become a family. Sometimes movies try to be emotional but feel fake. Pawn didn’t. It stayed simple and let the characters grow naturally. I’m glad it’s finally on Viki for US viewers.

Good movie. Simple story, but strong feelings. I liked the acting a lot, especially from the little girl. It wasn’t a big action movie or something crazy, but it stayed with me. That’s rare.

From a storytelling perspective, I think Pawn succeeded because it focused on relationships, not just situations. The plot is a bit unusual—using a child as collateral sounds shocking—but the film didn’t try to make it seem normal. It used that situation to explore how unexpected bonds can form under pressure. Doo-Seok’s arc was my favorite. He started rough but had so much depth. Sung Dong-Il always delivers, but here he had more space to show emotion. The cinematography was also soft and warm, which added to the mood. This isn’t just a drama—it’s a quiet character study.

I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys emotional stories. It is slow in the beginning, but the characters become more and more interesting. I think this is not just a story about debt or crime. It is really about how people grow when they are forced to care for each other. There is also some light humor, which helps balance the sad parts. The little girl did very well. I believe she has a strong future in acting.

Honestly, I clicked on the movie because of Sung Dong-Il. I’ve liked him since Along With the Gods. He plays grumpy but kind men so well. He didn’t disappoint here. And the little girl? I didn’t expect her to be that good. She carried many scenes with just her facial expressions. I believed her the whole time. The casting was perfect.

I am willing to watch any K-drama with Sung Dong-Il too. He's a great actor. My fave series is “Hwarang”.
