An otherwise nondescript Thursday happened to be the day Avatar fans have been waiting years for. A new animated project was just announced this morning from Nickelodeon and Avatar Studios. It’s not a movie, it’s not a spinoff. It is THE third Avatar series — Avatar: Seven Havens — the official continuation with the next Avatar in the line. What’s this Avatar like? No one knows yet, except for the details that they’re female and born to Earthbenders. “Avatar: Seven Havens is set in a world shattered by a devastating cataclysm,” says Nick’s description. “A young Earthbender discovers she’s the new Avatar after Korra – but in this dangerous era, that title marks her as humanity’s destroyer, not its savior. So, the next Avatar is an Earthbender? That’s cool. But what I’m more fascinated by is this whole “destroyer” angle. After Korra, who was pretty well liked by most, seeing an Avatar who’s feared and hunted adds some real stakes. The sibling dynamic also sounds intriguing. I wonder how much their origins will play into the overall plot. Can’t wait for more details to drop, but this series sounds like it could shake things up in the Avatar world.

I’m skeptical but intrigued. Avatar: Seven Havens is definitely going in a completely different direction from Aang and Korra, and I’m not sure if I’ll be into it right away. I think it could be cool to explore the “destroyer” side of the Avatar role, but I’m a little concerned about the dark, post-cataclysm world. Avatar has always been about hope and balance, and I’m not sure how I feel about it leaning too much into despair. Still, it’s Avatar, so I’ll give it a shot.
