What Am I made for?
“A Thousand Blows” is a Hulu Original Series, with 6 episodes, that will be released on February 21, 2025. ♦ “A Thousand Blows“, is set in the 1880s Victorian London, specifically the East End of London, and the plot revolves around the illegal boxing scene. Any time you get involved in the underworld there is no way you’re going to become squeaky clean. Even though you’re just boxing because it’s a skill you can use to make a living and survive, boxers are “owned”. People may describe the “sport” using nice words like the art of pugilism, but in London’s underbelly, the only art is probably the tattoos somewhere on the boxer’s body. Hezekiah Moscow (played by Malachi Kirby), from Jamaica, gets involved in the bare-knuckle boxing scene. Hezekiah is soooo good, that he grabs the attention of the queen. No. Not the Queen of England. Mary Carr, Queen of the Forty Elephants (played by Erin Doherty), is a criminal businesswoman who knows a money-maker when she sees one. It’s almost as if she heard that song by the Pet Shop Boys: “I’ve got the brains. You’ve got the brawn. Let’s make lots of money!” Only that group didn’t become […]

Man, this show looks cool! I'm into boxing and history, so this is like the perfect combo. It's awesome they're focusing on something like the Forty Elephants gang - never heard of them before. Might just binge-watch it on release day.

The moment I read about "A Thousand Blows," I was hooked. The idea of combining historical crime drama with the intensity of bare-knuckle boxing is just the kind of thing that gets me excited. I love how they've chosen to focus on characters from diverse backgrounds like Hezekiah Moscow, bringing a different cultural perspective to Victorian London. Erin Doherty as Mary Carr sounds like she'll be a powerhouse on screen, and I'm eager to see how this dynamic plays out. The show promises not just action but a look into the lives of those often overlooked in history. It's the kind of series that might make you think about history in a new light, questioning the narratives we’ve been fed.

Finally, something different! I mean, who knew about an all-female crime syndicate in Victorian times? This could be a sleeper hit if they manage to keep the action and drama balanced. Plus, the trailer looked promising.

I appreciate the educational aspect of highlighting lesser-known historical groups like the Forty Elephants
