Oni Press charges into March 2025 with a focus on gritty crime stories and horror, led by Christopher Cantwell and Tyler Crook’s “Out of Alcatraz.” This double-sized debut reimagines one of history’s greatest prison breaks, following Frank Morris and Clarence Anglin after their famous 1962 Alcatraz escape. Rather than end at their successful breakout, this series explores the harrowing aftermath as the convicts discover that freedom might be an even harsher sentence. The publisher continues its revival of EC Comics’ legacy with two horror anthologies. “Epitaphs from the Abyss” and “Cruel Kingdom” feature an impressive roster of creators including David Lapham, Peter Krause, and Corinna Bechko, bringing modern sensibilities to classic horror storytelling traditions. Original Concepts and Social Commentary Patrick Horvath debuts “Free For All,” a brutal one-shot examining capitalism through ritual combat. This oversized special follows reigning champion Ted Brooks, a real estate magnate forced to defend his wealth against his trained ex-wife in a deadly contest sponsored by the World Finance League. It’s a pointed commentary on wealth inequality wrapped in an action-packed package. "Out of Alcatraz" has a powerful atmosphere. I love a good narrative about a jail break, and this one is set after the escape? It's a really cool twist. I wonder what sort of problems they encounter after they go. Cantwell and Crook, too? That creative team is strong. This is one that I will absolutely pick up.

"Free For All" sounds like pure chaos. The idea of billionaires fighting each other to keep their money? That's a crazy concept, but it also makes you think a little. It's like a really extreme version of capitalism. I’m expecting a lot of over-the-top action and some dark humor. The different covers look cool too. It's interesting how they’re showing different perspectives on the fight. I’m definitely going to check this one out. It sounds like a fun, mindless action comic.

I’m always excited for more Rick and Morty comics. The "Spring Break Out" thing sounds hilarious. Rick taking a bunch of detention kids on a crazy interdimensional adventure? That's classic Rick. I can already imagine the kind of trouble they get into. And the "Ricklemania" miniseries? That's a fun concept too. Rick getting into wrestling? That’s something I never knew I wanted to see. I think this will be a good way to pass the time until the next season of the show comes out. I hope they do more themed miniseries like this.

As an avid fan of vintage EC Comics, I'm ecstatic to see these revivals. "Cruel Kingdom" and "Epitaphs from the Abyss" appear to emulate the vintage horror mood. I admire the way contemporary artists tell these stories. This is a fantastic way to introduce new readers to the horror genre. I'm really interested in David Lapham's artwork in "Epitaphs." His distinct style appears to blend in well with this type of horror. The fact that they are also developing homage variants is fantastic. Collecting them is always enjoyable. I hope these novels are truly terrifying.
