Wicked’s Box Office Magic: Defying Gravity and Expectations! The Wicked movie is off to a flying start, leaving naysayers eating their words and Glinda cosplayers twirling in joy. With a whopping $145 million budget, this Wizard of Oz prequel adaptation was expected to pull in a modest $20 million on opening day. Instead, it belted out a Defying Gravity-level $117 million at the domestic box office (as of this writing) and has already made $165 million worldwide. Congrats, folks, it’s officially breaking even faster than a flying monkey can soar! 🧙‍♀️💰 If you’ve stepped into a theater lately, it might feel like Barbie 2.0—costumes everywhere. Instead of pink jumpsuits, it’s all about Glinda’s sparkly frocks and Elphaba’s iconic green skin. (Glam meets green, anyone?) Last year, we had the Barbenheimer phenomenon, where Barbie and Oppenheimer had a mutually beneficial rivalry. Now, Wicked seems to have found its rival in Gladiator 2, with fans dubbing the pairing “Glicked.” Double features are back, baby, and they’re as dramatic as Elphaba’s defying gravity moment. The movie’s report card is looking shiny, too: an A from CinemaScore, a dazzling 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and even 89% from critics (who, let’s be real, […]

Cynthia Erivo is a revelation as Elphaba, and Ariana Grande brings so much sweetness to Glinda. I can't wait for part two next year! Definitely worth the price of a ticket, even if you haven't seen the musical.

So glad Wicked is doing so well! It deserves all the success. I loved the double feature with Gladiator 2 – perfect way to spend a Friday night. The costumes were insane, especially Glinda's sparkly dresses! Can't wait to see what new songs they add in part two. They prove those fascist haters wrong.

Living for the "Glicked" double feature trend! Wicked is all over my TikTok feed with people cosplaying and singing Defying Gravity. Love the positive reviews too, especially for Cynthia Erivo. So tired of haters complaining about diversity casting – she's clearly killing it as Elphaba!

Not a huge fan of musicals, but this Wicked hype is hard to ignore. Maybe I'll give it a shot on streaming instead of the theater. $117 million opening day is impressive though, can't deny that. Curious to see if it can maintain the momentum.

I'm not going to lie, I cried like a baby during Defying Gravity. There's something about the way Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande sing it that just hits you right in the feels. Everyone in the theater was sobbing, it was beautiful! Can't wait to experience it again on the big screen.

This movie has completely turned my perspective on the Wizard of Oz story. I used to think Dorothy was the hero, but now, after seeing Elphaba's side of the story, I can't help but feel a deep sense of empathy for her. She's misunderstood, persecuted, and ultimately betrayed by a society that fears her difference. **** You Dorothy. You bucket murdering spoiled brat,

While I understand the appeal of Elphaba's character and her tragic backstory, it's important to remember that she's also capable of great evil. Let's not forget that she tried to kill Dorothy, a young girl who was just trying to get home. Both characters are complex and flawed, and it's interesting to see the story from Elphaba's perspective. However, we shouldn't demonize Dorothy just because she's not the protagonist of this particular tale.

Genuinely impressed by Wicked’s opening day numbers. The fact that it nearly tripled expectations shows how much of a cultural phenomenon the musical still is. Seeing it resonate with audiences so powerfully, especially with fans turning theaters into cosplay conventions, speaks to the film’s magnetic appeal. Cynthia Erivo’s performance being hailed so highly makes me think she might walk away with an Oscar nod. For a musical to dominate the box office like this, it’s a signal that audiences still value theatrical storytelling—especially when it’s done with care and passion.

While Wicked’s financial success is worth noting, I’m more intrigued by its critical reception. Scoring 97% with audiences and 89% with critics is no small feat for a musical movie. That tells me this isn’t just a flashy adaptation but one that delivers substance. I hope Hollywood takes this as a sign that musicals deserve the same investment and attention as action blockbusters. However, the split into two films could be risky. I just hope they’re not stretching the material too thin for profit’s sake.
