Amazon Prime Officially Orders Tomb Raider Show To Series

Months ago, it was reported that Amazon was looking into making a Tomb Raider series. What’s confusing about this is that Netflix is also working on one — but THAT one will be animated, whereas this version will be live-action. It’s enough of a difference for two separate companies to split the rights. Today Amazon announced it has officially ordered the series into production. The original announcement mentioned Phoebe Waller-Bridge might be involved as showrunner and executive producer, and we can report that…yes, that is still true. She’s also writing all the Season One scripts, so she’s throwing herself into it. Between Fleabag and the first season of Killing Eve, Waller-Bridge usually does good work (note that this reporter has not seen Dial of Destiny). “If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she’d explode,” Waller-Bridge said in a statement. “Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara

I’m not so sure about this. Don’t get me wrong, Phoebe Waller-Bridge is talented, but turning a video game into a successful live-action series is a tough challenge. The recent Tomb Raider games were gritty and dark, and I wonder if they’ll stick to that tone or try something different. Plus, Amazon and Netflix both having versions sounds like overkill. I guess I’ll wait and see how it pans out, but I’m cautiously optimistic at best. They need to nail the casting for Lara Croft, or this could easily fall flat.

As someone who has followed Tomb Raider from the very beginning, I have to say that Angelina Jolie’s portrayal of Lara Croft set a high bar. Her performance was iconic and embodied the spirit of the original games perfectly. She brought a certain charisma and toughness to the role that made it unforgettable. On the other hand, Alicia Vikander’s version, while earnest, didn’t quite capture the essence of Lara for me. The movie felt too focused on gritty realism and lacked the adventurous, larger-than-life feel that defines Tomb Raider. Vikander is a talented actress, but the script and direction didn’t do justice to the character’s legacy. I’m hopeful that with Phoebe Waller-Bridge at the helm, this new Amazon series will bring back that classic Lara Croft charm and excitement that we all love.

I’m really excited about the new Tomb Raider series, but I hope they focus on delivering a great story rather than getting bogged down in woke politics. Lara Croft is an iconic character because of her adventurous spirit, intelligence, and resilience, not because she fits into any particular political agenda. Phoebe Waller-Bridge has the talent to create a compelling narrative that respects the character’s legacy. I’m looking forward to seeing thrilling adventures, intricate puzzles, and rich character development. If they can capture the essence of what makes Tomb Raider special, without turning it into a platform for social commentary, I think it could be a fantastic series that appeals to both long-time fans and newcomers.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge can do no wrong in my eyes, so I’m totally on board with this Tomb Raider series. Her work on Killing Eve showed she can handle action and suspense, while Fleabag demonstrated her incredible ability to create deep, relatable characters. I think she’ll bring a fresh perspective to Lara Croft, making her more complex and interesting. The fact that she’s writing all the scripts herself is a huge plus. I can’t wait to see her take on this iconic character and the adventures she’ll craft for us.
