Dragonbane TTRPG Review - Core Set

When asked to review the Dragonbane TTRPG, I’m ashamed to admit I was a little disappointed. Another generic fantasy Dungeons and Dragons clone? Oh, the joy. All that anguish disappeared in a flash, once I began to browse the PDF. The image of a Darkwing Duck character leaping through the air, brandishing two mean-looking knives, was the first thing I saw. With that one image, Dragonbane had suckered me in. With my disappointment forgotten, I wasted no time in devouring the rule book. For this review, I only received the PDF version of the Core Set. So while I cannot review the physical version of the Dragonbane TTRPG, I can offer that this is a Free League Publishing product, and they are historically high quality in nature.

To be honest, I wasn't really enthused when I initially heard about Dragonbane TTRPG. Another fantasy game, I mean? But wow, was I mistaken! This game's artwork is extremely amazing. It's like entering a whole new universe full with adventure. The rules are also well-written, making it simple to learn and play. I had a lot of fun going through the rules and developing my character. Dragonbane far surpassed what I expected.

The combat system didn't sit well with me. Monsters hitting automatically and characters being squishy made it quite challenging, maybe even too difficult for my taste. Plus, all those optional rules confused me a bit. I'm not sure if I was playing the game the way it was intended. It's definitely not my go-to fantasy RPG, but it might appeal to players who enjoy a more intense combat experience. The artwork is nice, but it didn't wow me like it did for some others. The rules are decently crafted, but I found the combat system to be too difficult for my liking. It felt like a constant struggle, and I prefer games that strike a better balance between challenge and enjoyment. Overall, it's not a bad game, but it didn't capture my interest enough to become my go-to fantasy RPG.

I loved the skill advancement system, where you roll Dragons and Demons. It's such a unique and engaging mechanic. I can't recommend Dragonbane enough to anyone who enjoys fantasy tabletop RPGs. It's a winner in my book!

Dragonbane TTRPG is a game that took me by surprise. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. The artwork is beautiful, and it really immerses you in the world of the game. The rules are well-crafted, and character creation is straightforward. The combat system is intense and keeps you on your toes. I appreciate the absence of levels and experience points, as it adds a fresh take on character progression. Dragonbane has definitely earned a spot on my gaming shelf.

Dragonbane TTRPG left me with mixed feelings. The artwork is visually appealing, but it didn't have that "wow" factor for me. The rules are well-explained, although I found some sections a bit convoluted.

In comparison to other tabletop RPGs I've played, Dragonbane TTRPG provides a unique experience. The artwork is vivid and evocative, distinguishing it from more standard fantasy aesthetics. The rules are well-crafted and simple to understand, similar to prior TTRPGs I've played. The combat system in Dragonbane, on the other hand, seems pleasantly distinct. The roll-under concept, combined with the lack of standard hit points and saving throws, results in a more dynamic and difficult combat experience. It's a break from the traditional mechanics I'm used to, and I like the new approach to gameplay. In general, Dragonbane TTRPG is a unique and interesting addition to the tabletop RPG genre.

I hear you on Dragonbane TTRPG. The artwork is nice, but it didn't really blow me away. And I agree, some of the rules are a bit convoluted. I think they could have been simplified a bit, especially for new players.

I have never see a tabletop game in my locality before, the closest i have seen so far was one mini game found at the back of a cabin biscuits bag.
