You have no idea how long it’s taken for HBO Max to send out any information about the Tiny Toons reboot they’ve been working on. Three whole years have gone by since the 2020 announcement of Tiny Toons Looniversity, but WB finally got around to throwing out a trailer this morning. I suppose now they can do a joke about Montana Max buying the whole streamer and changing its name to be all about him.
The first thing we noticed is how, in terms of appearance, the show has barely changed from its original incarnation: smooth, fluid hand-drawn animation and lots of wacky sight gags, exaggerated expressions, whomping-loud violence, etc. However, this is way more of a REBOOT in the traditional sense than the Animaniacs revival was. They’re the same characters, but it’s a completely different continuity.
In this one, Acme Looniversity is a college, not a high school. A lot of the voices are also different, but that one couldn’t be avoided since something like half the original cast is dead anyway. The most controversial change, though — and something we still don’t understand — is that Buster and Babs Bunny have been made twin siblings. The most unavoidable fact of the original show was that they weren’t related because they pointed it out all the time. “We’re Buster and Babs Bunny, no relation.”
Executive producer Erin Gibson still hasn’t explained WHY they made such a drastic change for the reboot. But she did lay out her motive in an interview from last year: “I wanted to dive into a brother/sister relationship that looked really symbiotic and collaborative and supportive, not antagonistic. Seeing two people who are really on the same page, and then how do people who are so close make make new friends? You know, find out who they are by these new relationships, these new college experiences while still having fun and doing the dumbest stuff you’ll ever see on TV, but having story and plot points and character development.”
Tiny Toons Looniversity still has no defined release date, but WB promises it will be out “this fall.”
