Everything We Know About Resident Evil: The Final Chapter
Resident Evil is the name of a popular action-horror video game series, and it’s also the name of a long string of movies that are ostensibly based on the games, but are actually tales of fanfiction some guy is writing about his wife.
Paul W.S. Anderson has written and directed all the Resident Evil movies, and he is married to actress Milla Jovovich. The winding plot of these movies has plenty of elements from Capcom’s game series such as Albert Wesker, the Umbrella Corporation, and a virus that turns people into zombies, but the central character is not Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine or any member of STARS. It’s a superpowered unstoppable toughie named Alice — played by Jovovich. When you think about what’s going on, it’s actually kind of romantic, but does Paul have to create his spousely fantasies using someone else’s property?
The sixth RE movie of this nature will be coming out next month (a January release, so you know it’s good). The subtitle promises this is really and truly the last one, but Sony has claimed that before, and “the final chapter” is a cheap promise in Hollywood. We will admit that the story has seemingly been taken as far as possible. As this one opens the bad guys are so victorious that there are only 4,472 unaffected humans remaining on the planet. If that wasn’t grim enough, Alice has lost all her superpowers, and will have to save what’s left of the world on her own. Where do you go from there? If there’s a seventh movie it would just be Alice and Wesker as the last sentient humans on the planet, fighting each other alone.
Well, anyway, we have videos. A clip has been released in Japan and Dread Central got ahold of it; it’s in English with Japanese subtitles. And even though it’s less than a minute long, it contains TWO jump scares, one involving an old dot-matrix printer.
Does Alice even need superpowers if she’s this lethal with her own reflexes? One wonders.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter will be released January 27, 2017. There’s also a trailer, and it’s interactive!
