A New Patent From Nintendo Depicts A VR Accessory
Both the PS4 and the Xbox One will be getting their own VR goggles soon. Will Nintendo follow suit? If they don’t, it’s perfectly understandable — they prefer to start trends, not follow them, and they ARE the company that got burned by their own Virtual Boy. But that was over 20 years ago, and if a patent filed last summer and made public today is any indication, they may be planning to take another shot at VR.
Some of the cheaper VR headsets on the market don’t have their own expensive displays built in. Instead they use an inserted smartphone, like Samsung’s Galaxy VR. Because of the shortcut there’s a smaller resolution, but that may not matter to the average consumer yet. This patent depicts something similar, with the detatchable screen of Nintendo’s Switch console fitting into the front of a headset.
As to whether this would be top-heavy…..Jimmy Kimmel got to be the first American to hold the Switch in portable form last week, and it appeared to be pretty light. He never said as much, but he was seen casually holding it with one hand for a while. At any rate, Nintendo wouldn’t risk selling a product that had the potential to break your neck.
