One of the most successful media tie-in products was Hi-C’s Ecto-Cooler in the 80’s. Based on the Real Ghostbusters TV series and using the green color of Slimer, it was guzzled by the tons from drink boxes in school cafeterias, and stayed on the market well after the show left the air.
Now that a new Ghostbusters movie is heading to theaters this summer, GB merchandise could be relevant enough again for the return of Ecto-Cooler to be possible — or at least that’s the hope of those who remember drinking it. Last Friday on Twitter a fan asked Paul Feig, director of the new movie, if there was a chance.
@paulfeig do you know if the Hi-C Ecto Cooler will be released around Ghostbusters’ release date? #masshysteria
It didn’t take long to get a response:
Sooner than that. Details to come.
We don’t know exactly when Ecto-Cooler will return to existence, or if its release will be limited in any way, but it has now been confirmed to be happening. Between this and Crystal Pepsi, it’s a dream year for fans of discontinued soft drinks! (And yes, Crystal Pepsi is coming back as well….)
