Train To Busan p1

Do You Know About the ‘Train to Busan’ Universe?

In 2016, viewers were thrilled with the release of “Train to Busan” because it delivered something rare: a zombie thriller with genuine emotional weight. Instead of relying only on scares, the film grounded its chaos in a deeply human story about a father trying to protect his daughter. That gave every chase, sacrifice, and close call real impact.

  • The tight, claustrophobic setting of a speeding train kept the tension high from start to finish. The characters ~ especially the heroic supporting cast ~ had the audience rooting for them in a big way. Add in some of the most inventive action sequences in the horror genre, and it’s no surprise the film became a global standout.
  • If you want to continue enjoying an adrenaline-fueled viewing experience, all of the films in the Train to Busan universe deserve a spot on your watchlist. The post-apocalyptic action universe consists of 3 films, and one is animated.  Train to Busan (2016); Seoul Station (2016) (the animated prequel); and Peninsula (2020)

Train to Busan
STORYLINE: A fast-paced zombie thriller set on a train from Seoul to Busan, this film follows a father and daughter caught in a sudden outbreak. As chaos spreads through the confined space, passengers must choose between selfish survival and collective sacrifice. It blends intense action with emotional depth, highlighting human behavior under extreme pressure.

Seoul Station

STORYLINE: A homeless man’s mysterious death at Seoul Station triggers a sudden zombie outbreak that engulfs the city overnight. As chaos spreads, a young woman, her estranged father, and her boyfriend struggle to reunite while confronting both the undead and the harsh realities of society.

NOTES:

This is a fully animated feature film, and it is absolutely considered part of the “Train to Busan” universe. It is part of the trilogy with the live-action films “Train to Busan” and “Peninsula”. Even though the animation style is different, the story, tone, and themes directly connect to the live-action films. It’s officially recognized as part of the franchise by the studio and the director. The animation doesn’t break canon, it expands it.

This animated prequel explores the early stages of the outbreak in downtown Seoul. It centers on a young woman navigating homelessness, strained relationships, and social neglect as the crisis unfolds. Gritty and unsettling, the story focuses less on spectacle and more on societal breakdown and the vulnerability of marginalized people.

  • IMDb rating: 6.1 out of 10 stars
  • MyDramaList: 4.5 out of 10 stars
  • Viki viewers: 9.1 out of 10 stars

I absolutely love “Train to Busan”! The way it balances the horror of a zombie apocalypse with deep emotional arcs, especially the father-daughter relationship, is just incredible. The universe kept expanding after the first film, too. For those who watched the follow-ups, do they keep that same emotional depth? I always worry sequels just pile on more action!

I absolutely love “Train to Busan”! The way it balances the horror of a zombie apocalypse with deep emotional arcs, especially the father-daughter relationship, is just incredible. I’m so excited for the release of “Train to Busan 2” next week; I can’t wait to see how they expand the universe and what new characters they'll introduce. It’s so cool to see how they’re building this world. Do you think they'll keep the same emotional depth in the sequel? I hope they don’t just focus on more action!

Train to Busan 2, aka “Peninsula is available on various streaming platforms in the USA. However, it will be removed from Netflix in May 2026. Fans would love Train to Busan 3, but nothing is official. According to YAHOO Entertainment, Americans want to do a remake, and it's titled “The Last Train to New York”. Great! Just what New York needs. ZOMBIES!! Lol.
