Review in Parts – Golden Sun: Dark Dawn

11/20/2011

I’m currently in the middle of playing through Golden Sun: Dark Dawn. It’s been years since playing the first two games and I might have to dip back into those after finishing the latest game. I thought I’d drop in with some quick criticisms and compliments for the game.

  • With this being a sequel, I was hoping the game would pick up with its original cast and not 30 years after the last game.
  • It’s absolutely gorgeous. Everything in the game is very well-designed.
  • There are minor frame rate issues.
  • I don’t really understand why, in this day and age, video games have two or three clearly different in style in-game models.
  • The puzzles are a little simplistic. The only times I’ve had difficulty solving a puzzle has been when the camera angle made it difficult to see what needed to be done.
  • The characters have a tendency to do things, not because of some internal drive, but because the script tells them to.
The game does drag a bit as you get further into it.
  • The battles are fun, but I find that there’s no real reason to use Psynergy within battle. You can get by solely with attacks in most of the smaller battles and a combination of Djinni and Summons in boss battles.
  • I love that the number or random battles seem to be more balanced in this game. They allow you time to explore dungeons between each random encounter, which I think it particularly important considering how many puzzles you’re expected to solve.

Complaints aside I am having some fun with the game. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
