In terms of Castlevania cartoons, Netflix has been good to us. They let the original Castlevania anime go on for four seasons and tell its entire story (and they even let us have a Blu-Ray of it). Now the same team (Powerhouse Animation) has returned to tell a new Castlevania story, subtitled Nocturne.
There’s plenty of lore to draw from in the Castlevania series. Everything about the original show came from ONE game (on the NES, no less): Castlevania III Dracula’s Curse. Castlevania Nocturne will take inspiration from Rondo of Blood, the game where you played as Richter Belmont, descendant of Trevor from III.
It’s 18th century France. There’s a revolution going on! Heads are literally rolling, and the aristocracy is looking for anything that can help them cling to power. And we do mean “anything,” as some of them now seem to be sporting fangs and a taste for blood. Richter enters this chaos on a mission to aid the resistance, spurned by the death of his mother to a vampire. There he meets spell-slinging Maria Renard, and the pair team up to find and stake Dracula once again.
Since these shows only adapt the games in the loosest sense (there’s not a lot to work with, narratively) we can’t tell you what will truly happen. You’ll have to watch to find out! Castlevania Nocturne premieres its first season on Netflix September 28.
