Cover Of Absolute Batman #20 Revealed

In February DC teased that Absolute Batman #20 — which was still a few numbers away at the time – would introduce Absolute Robin to the universe. Though Dick Grayson had made a small appearance prior, it wasn’t a guarantee that he’d be Robin. The tease was garnished with an altered cover that depicted Superman-Dawn-of-Justice/” data-wpel-link=”internal”>Batman gazing up at a giant “R.”

Today DC revealed the full, unredacted cover. Since I don’t really read this comic I can’t tell if it answers any questions. Does it for you?

As the dust settles in the city of Gotham after the loss of [redacted], Robins enter the scene ready to hunt and more than one secret will be revealed in this seminal issue.

The synopsis states “Robins,” plural, so there could turn out to be more than one if that’s not a typo…but the cover doesn’t REALLY reveal anything to my eyes, as everyone is masked.

DC’s Absolute line was launched as a back-to-basics series that reimagines their most iconic heroes in their most extreme forms by taking away their “cheat codes.” In this alternate universe, Superman doesn’t have as many powers, Diana doesn’t come from a nurturing home, and Batman isn’t rich. They save the day simply by fighting and struggling as hard as they can.

Absolute Batman #20, by Nick Dragotta and Frank Martin, goes on sale May 13.

Oh man, I’m really excited about Absolute Batman #20! The prospect of Absolute Robin joining the mix sounds like it could be a game changer. Dick Grayson has such a rich history, and seeing him get the spotlight in this way is pretty awesome. I can’t wait to see how they weave his story into the Batman universe. Is it February yet? Let's go!

I actually like that the cover is not giving clear answers. For me, part of the fun is trying to guess what is going on before release. The mention of “Robins” is what caught my attention the most. I think they are trying to do something different from the usual single Robin story. Maybe it is a group or maybe different versions of the same character. Also, this version of Batman not being rich makes the idea of multiple Robins more interesting, because it means he cannot just support them easily. He would have to struggle with them. That sounds more grounded to me. I am not fully sold yet, but I am curious enough to check it out when it releases.

I am a bit confused by the direction. I understand the idea of removing the “cheat codes,” but sometimes it feels like they remove too much. Batman without resources is already a big change. Now if there are multiple Robins, I wonder how they will explain that in a believable way. Who trains them? Who supports them? I need a clear reason, not just a cool idea. The cover does not help me understand anything, so I feel more unsure than excited right now.

I like simple stories, so I am not sure about multiple Robins. One Robin is already enough if the writing is good. Sometimes adding more characters makes things messy. But I will not judge too early. Maybe they have a clear plan. The idea of Batman struggling without money is already interesting, so I hope they focus on that instead of adding too many new elements at once.
