Chrono Cross 20th Anniversary Piano Album Announced

-

As I’ve said every previous time Square’s PS1 RPG Chrono Cross has been brought up, this game has the best soundtrack of any video game ever made. I’m not alone in that sentiment either. So when Wayo Records announced they were thinking about producing a 20th anniversary album of piano covers — but only if it could receive proper Kickstarter funding — the masses responded with a bullhorn.

The asking price of 25,000 Euros was smashed within hours. The tally currently stands at $38,000 and rising, with 28 days to go. $17 guarantees a digital copy, $25 gets you a physical CD.

What makes this album so special is that it features contributions by those close to the game, as well as other Final Fantasy titles of the past. It has arrangements from Yasunori Mitsuda’s sound team, Procyon Studio, and composer Masashi Hamauzu (Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy VII Remake), performances by Benyamin Nuss (pianist for Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts concerts), and cover artwork by Kiyoshi Arai (Final Fantasy and the Xenoblade series).

“We are quite fond of the various piano arrangement albums that exist for many gaming franchises, and we’re particularly partial to ones arranged by composer and arranger Masashi Hamauzu,” says Romain Dasnoy, producer at Wayo Records. “We’ve always yearned for a volume dedicated to Chrono Cross, and the 20th anniversary seemed like an opportune time.”

“We wanted to be sure to do it right, so we conceived it as a classy piano album with arrangements by Masashi Hamauzu and arrangers close to Yasunori Mitsuda. This is exactly what Chrono Cross deserves, and we are working hard to make it an indispensable work for fans and music lovers alike.”

The official title is Across The Worlds: Chrono Cross Wayo Piano Collection, and it will be released this December.
