Chimera (2021) ~ Unmasking the Explosive Fire Within

-

“Chimera” is a 2021 Korean drama, 16 episodes, categorized as Crime, Thriller, Police procedural, Fantasy, and Supernatural, streaming on Viki and Tubi TV. This K-drama’s title and thematic concept are drawn from Greek mythology. The chimera is a fire-breathing hybrid monster.

SUMMARY: A detective, an FBI profiler, and a surgeon unravel a series of explosive murders connected to a decades-old case. As they dig deeper, long-buried secrets and personal histories collide.

An Explosion Caused By a Lighter 35 Years Later?

In “Chimera”, the past and present are intertwined through a series of explosive murders. In 1984, there was a devastating explosion.  Forensics could not explain how it happened. But there was a lighter with a strange symbol found at the scene. Law enforcement referred to it as the “Chimera Case”. Thirty-five (35) years later, a nearly identical explosion occurs. Has the Chimera killer returned, or is this a copycat?

There are three (3) main characters:

  1. Detective Cha Jae-Hwan
  2. Eugene Hathaway, a profiler and former FBI agent
  3. Doctor Lee Joong-Yeop

Detective Cha Jae-Hwan is working on the present-day investigation. While initially driven by duty, Cha Jae-Hwan gradually uncovers a personal connection to the original case in 1984.

Eugene Hathaway is a Korean-American profiler and former FBI agent. She was adopted and raised in America. She works with Cha Jae-Hwan, providing her expertise, but the case also has ties to her own past. Eugene Hathaway brings a sharp analytical perspective and an outsider’s clarity to the investigation. Her insights into criminal psychology lead to the solution. At the same time, her understanding of her own identity leads to her own evolution.

Doctor Lee Joong-Yeop is a skilled surgeon who was also raised abroad. He returns to Korea and soon finds himself entangled in the Chimera case. His composed exterior conceals a fractured past shaped by trauma, loss, and unanswered questions. He has a connection to the original case. As the investigation unfolds, it is difficult to tell if the doctor is a potential suspect or a victim of circumstances beyond his control.

Connecting the Past and the Present

These three characters delve into the long-buried secrets of 1984 and uncover corruption within powerful institutions, unethical medical experiments, and a conspiracy that destroyed multiple lives. Each revelation exposes how the truth was manipulated to protect influential figures.  Additionally, how and why the original Chimera case was never truly resolved. As new explosions occur, the team races against time to stop the perpetrator while grappling with the emotional consequences of what they uncover.

“Chimera” is more than a conventional murder mystery. It is a story about generational trauma, institutional corruption, and the enduring consequences of secrets left to fester. It asked the question: Who are the real monsters? The killers, or the systems that create them?

Viewership and Rating:

My personal rating is the same as the Viki viewers.

The scriptwriters for “Chimera” took their inspiration from Greek mythology, instead of drawing from Korean folklore or myths. There are no supernatural creatures in Korean mythology that resemble or relate to the Greek Chimera. In this Korean drama, there is a monstrous hybrid creature.  The symbolism is used metaphorically to represent a hybrid or composite threat from:

WOW! That’s quite an inspiration! Agree?
