♦ A Rural Reset That Rebuilds a Family from the Roots Up

In “Cabbage Your Life”, Seong Tae-Hun’s life in Seoul changed in an a instant. He was working as a corporate manager in the city and complained to his boss about the quality of their kimchi product. Seong Tae-Hun insisted that their kimchi was not consistent because they kept changing suppliers. The taste of the cabbage from one supplier was not as good as that from another supplier. This was going to cause them to lose customers. The logic was sound. His boss listened to him patiently, and the next day he came in to work, he learned that he had been transferred to Yeonri-ri Village, a rural community. All of the corporate employees know that when you get transferred to the countryside, it’s a demotion, and you’ve been exiled.

Of course, the first thing needed to do was inform his wife, Jo Mi-Ryeo, and their three children: Seong Ji-Cheon, the oldest, who is in medical school; Seong Ji-Sang, a middle schooler; and Seong Ji-Gu, who is in elementary school. The two younger kids and the wife were living in Canada. Emphasis on “were”. Before Seong Tae-Hun could tell his family about the transfer, they had already come back home to the city. The middle child had some problems and got expelled from school. They had no other choice but to return home. They also had no other choice but to move with Seong Tae-Hun to the rural village. But family stays together!

I’m the Village Chief

The first person Seong Tae-Hun encounters is Im Ju-Hyeong, the village chief. He is deeply committed to preserving the community’s traditions and protecting its land. Also, he doesn’t like the corporation that sends employees to the village. Based on previous experiences, they never made a positive contribution and practically destroyed good farm land. He has already made up his mind not to help Seong Tae-Hun with anything and has told all of the villagers not to offer him any assistance either. Why bother? He’ll leave quickly, just like the other corporate employees did.

The first person Jo Mi-Ryeo encounters is Nam Hye-Sun, the wife of the village chief. She informs her that they are neighbors. In addition, she heads the women’s association and wields significant influence in the village’s social and political dynamics. She tells Jo Mi-Ryeo that if her family is going to stay for a year or longer, she must join the women’s association. But the other city folks who came from her husband’s company barely lasted two months. So she doesn’t expect they’ll be seeing each other a lot.

One of the Kids Loves the Village

The younger kids, Seong Ji-Sang and Seong Ji-Gu, discover that the village is so small that there is only one school, and they will both attend it. Seong Ji-Sang is already having adjustment issues and wants to return to the city NOW! Seong Ji-Gu, the youngest, is willing to adapt, except when he speaks in English; the other kids don’t know what he’s talking about. (O.o)

Seong Ji-Cheon woke up early and left the house to explore this wonderful new community. The air is clean, the grass is green, and … he crosses paths with Im Bo-Mi. She is the daughter of Im Ju-Hyeong and Nam Hye-Sun. Seong Ji-Cheon thinks he could be very happy living in the village.

It’s Just Temporary. Or Is It?

Seong Tae-Hun is determined to grow the perfect cabbage for making kimchi and even name it “Seong Tae-Hun cabbage”. He talked with the corporation’s top executive, who gave him hope. If he succeeded in growing quality napa cabbage, he could return to the corporate office. Seong Tae-Hun’s family must adapt from city life to country life for just a little while. It shouldn’t take that long to grow a perfect cabbage. The other employees who were there before him failed. But he’s convinced himself that it’s because they just didn’t know how to grow good cabbage.

However, growing cabbage was not the only thing he had to do to achieve success. The villagers fear commercialization and cultural erosion, and they worry the corporation will disrupt the village’s delicate balance. Winning them over is going to be a real challenge.

As time passes, Seong Tae-Hun is not sure he wants to return to the city. Living in the countryside gives him space to breathe. Maybe moving to Yeonriri village is not a punishment but an opportunity. That’s how he feels. But what about his family?

Viewership and Rating:

My personal rating is the same as that of Amazon customers.

“Cabbage Your Life” has such a quirky name, I almost didn’t add it to my watch list. But I’m glad I did. Such an adorable cast. Reminded me of “Potato Lab” for the research part of the storyline. But also made me think about “Immortal Classic” because if you’re going to make kimchi, the cabbage has to be just right. Right? LOL.
