Remember the Kickstarter for Thorn, Jeff Smith’s college comic strip which had never been completely collected before in a mass-market book? It was just the first in a series of books Smith plans to crowdfund, reprinting his entire life’s work up to this point. The entire Bone saga is up next, to be released in four volumes, each with bonus material never before seen.
BONE Deluxe Edition Part One: The Valley reprints the first two graphic novel collections, Out From Boneville and The Great Cow Race, in black and white (Scholastic owns the rights to the color versions). They’ll differ from the One Volume Edition in that they’ll be larger: at 12.5″ x 8.75″, this will be the biggest size Bone has ever been.
Both a hardcover and a paperback are being offered in the Kickstarter campaign; as with Thorn the hardcover is a campaign exclusive and can only be nabbed here. It’s unfortunately twice as expensive as the paperback: the latter tier is $50 and the former tier is $100. But if you feel like spending even more….
Smith has arranged a crazy number of bonuses as a reward for the $600 Big Merch Tier. He’ll give you four ceramic coasters, four Individual Cloisonné Pins, a die-cut Map of The Valley at 8.5” x 12”, a full-color flipbook of Fone Bone being chased by a Rat Creature (originally sold in 1994 and animated by Tom Bancroft), Infinite Objects Animated Frame of the same scene, and a Fone Bone Evolution Print poster, all in an exclusive red box. Only 85 of these packages will be sold and 23 have gone so far.
In the “so obscenely expensive you can forget about it” territory are the personally hand-drawn “Smiley in his cow suit” art pieces, which can only be obtained for $5,500 and only for ten people (as of this writing eight have claimed one). There was even, briefly, the chance to commission Smith to create the art piece of your choice at $10,000. He only offered three.
Putting all that into perspective, $100 doesn’t sound like that much. The campaign for BONE Deluxe Edition Part One: The Valley will be open until December 28, Copies will ship in May and the mass-msrket paperback will hit stores the following summer.
