Black Widow Lives In First Teaser Trailer
Those who saw Infinity War know Natasha Romanoff, aka the superheroine Black Widow, perished in the events of Avengers: Endgame. And those who didn’t see Avengers: Endgame still know this fact because they’ve been on the Internet at some point between May 2019 and now.
So how can Natasha be up and running about, let alone be starring in her own feature (coming next May)? Because, if you haven’t already guessed, this one’s a prequel. It’s not immediately obvious because a Blockbuster Video doesn’t appear, but this is the past. The movie takes place between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, according to Marvel Studios.
Marvel also says the Black Widow movie will mark the official start of Phase Four in the MCU. That must mean something happens here that’s a big hint for what’s going to take place in future, present-based movies. No one knows what that could be; this teaser trailer, which went up yesterday, spends far more time introducing characters than setting up plot. We’ll get to the plot in the next trailer.
Natasha has family, and they appear to be crimefighters like her. This is most loudly the case with the Red Guardian, her father figure and mentor played by David Harbour. But there’s also Yelena, another refugee of the Russian spy program that birthed Black Widow — she’s played by Florence Pugh — and Melina, played by Rachel Weisz. As this family sits down around the dinner table, who will they be facing off against?
We’re told it’s the Taskmaster, a villain with the power to copy the moves of his opponent. Natasha may be the world’s greatest spy, but could her match be met in herself? (Well, she’s not gonna die….yet.) Black Widow premieres in theaters May 1, 2020.
