SUMMARY: Two lawyers – one experienced and one a rookie – must work together on a wide range of court cases. Their professional approach to matters of justice is as different as night and day. The experienced lawyer is icy cold and can be brutal. But he wins the case because he never intends to lose. The rookie is empathetic and tenderhearted, always putting the client first. You can’t be just without a heart.
In “Beyond the Bar”, Yoon Seok-hoon is a partner lawyer and the leader of the litigation team at a highly respected law firm. If his superiors, colleagues, subordinates, or junior lawyers were to describe his professional demeanor, they’d probably use words like: cold, detached, icy, hyper-rational, stoic in court, sometimes even brutal and heartless. His approach to justice is clinical and antiseptic. He has a meticulous legal mind and unyielding standards.
Yoon Seok-hoon is a perfectionist, detached but principled, and his moral and ethical compass is always pointed in the right direction. At work, he is emotionally distant and remains aloof from others. But personally – and of course, nobody knows – he struggles with grief over the traumatic loss of an unborn child and a fractured relationship. He guards his heart because of the pain he experienced in his marriage. But he does have a heart.
Enter Kang Hyo-min, a rookie attorney. If Yoon Seok-hoon had his way, she would not have been hired. She clearly has a big heart. Indeed, her co-workers might say she’s the emotional heartbeat of the law firm. She is extremely intelligent, empathetic, and tenacious. But it’s her virtue or moral courage that makes her stand out, or rather above others, in the cutthroat legal world. Kang Hyo-min’s professional approach is a sharp contrast to Yoon Seok-hoon’s. Kang Hyo-min listens carefully to her clients to understand their emotional and psychological realities. Using this approach, she often uncovers truths that others overlooked.
Kang Hyo-min has a strong moral compass but is sort of lacking in social graces. She ends up working with Yoon Seok-hoon on high-stakes cases. Initially, they butt heads over legal strategy as well as personal values and beliefs. But as they navigate the various cases AND WIN, they both begin to develop respect and admiration for one another. Particularly, Yoon Seok-hoon admires Kang Hyo-min’s diligence and integrity, and he mentors her. Kang Hyo-min doesn’t just grow; she transforms from being a rookie to becoming a trusted, formidable lawyer.
My personal rating is the same as 9 out of 10 stars.
Legal drama is my favorite genre. So when I find a K-drama with a great cast, good character development in their professional and personal lives, interesting court cases, and good pacing, I rate the series highly. “Beyond the Bar” grabbed my attention right from the start and kept it to the end.
