“Parole Examiner Lee” ~ I am the Last Judge

“Parole Examiner Lee” is a 2024 Korean drama TV series, with 12 episodes, categorized as Police procedural, Legal drama, Thriller, Crime, and Mystery; and streaming on Viki.

SUMMARY: An attorney is offered a bribe. Since the briber had connections with people in high places, instead of paying money, he asked to get a job as a Parole Examiner. What? Why? Because a parole examiner is “the last judge”.

The Role of a Parole Examiner

In “Parole Examiner Lee”, Lee Han Shin introduces himself as an attorney to a high-profile prisoner to get close to him. The prisoner is accustomed to offering bribes and rarely has a problem with people refusing. The money. But there is one corrections officer he is having difficulty persuading. The officer even has a sick child and he can’t bribe him by offering to pay for the medical bills.

It so happens the corrections officer and Lee Han Shin are close friends and he also tries to persuade him. The corrections officer won’t budge. Truthfully, Lee Han Shin is pleased his friend is difficult to buy off because Lee Han Shin has ideas of his own on how to make criminals pay for their crimes.

His plan worked and he managed to gain the confidence of the high-profile prisoner who asked him how much he wanted. He knew the prisoner was the head of a major business in South Korea and had connections everywhere – the government, law enforcement, etc. He asked to get a job as a Parole Examiner. WHAT? He’s an attorney. Why would he want to take a low-paying job like that?

  • A parole examiner has several duties but two main duties include: (1) Evaluating the risk to society if a parolee is allowed into the general population again; and (2) Conducting fair and impartial parole hearings to approve or disapprove the prisoner’s release. The primary purpose of performing these duties to ensure public safety.

Lee Han Shin described his role as a parole examiner as “the last judge”.

He will decide whether or not a ‘menace to society’ should ever be let out of prison before completing their sentence. He plans to not only deny parole for the high-profile prisoner but for others who have paid off the other parole examiners so they can get back on out on the streets and commit more crimes without impunity.

Lee Han Shin gets the job and is now Parole Examiner Lee. Since neither the prisoners, politicians, nor other parole examiners play by “the rules”, P.E. Lee comes up with “creative ways” to thwart the approval of the parole for the prisoners, with the intent of keeping them in prison until they complete their sentences. He gets help from Detective Lieutenant An Seo Yun and an unlikely ally, Choi Hwa Ran, who is a loan shark. Let the games begin!

OMG, this sounds like the perfect drama for my next review! A lawyer turned parole examiner fighting against corruption? That's such a great storyline. I'm already imagining the dramatic scenes and the intense confrontations.

Wait a minute—a lawyer turning become a parole examiner to snoop on dishonest criminals? Enroll me! For a weekend binge-watch, this drama seems ideal. I adore the notion of an underdog defeating a system that has been stacked against them. And allies of the loan shark and detective? This show sounds amazing!

Interesting premise! I haven't heard of "Parole Examiner" before, but the whole "last judge" concept is intriguing. It's good to see a drama tackle the issue of corrupt parole systems. Ratings seem pretty good too, especially on Viki. Maybe I can squeeze in a few episodes after work this week.

YASSSSSS Go Soo is in this?! This is an automatic watch for me just for that. He's amazing in everything he does. Plus, the plot sounds like a refreshing change of pace. I'm tired of the usual rom-com tropes. Lawyer turned vigilante parole examiner? This has all the makings of a great drama. Thanks for the recommendation!

I am uncertain about this one, hmm. It sounds a little...sketchy to use "creative ways" to refuse parole. I like my dramas more realistically based. A 9 out of 10 on IMDb also seems a little excessive. Usually, those evaluations are exaggerated. For the time being, I might continue to rewatch "Crash Landing on You" as normal.

A justice-seeking parole examiner in David vs. Goliath? This is exactly what I'm looking for! I like how a loan shark and detective are included. It sounds like a story with a distinct protagonist that is both complicated and exciting. I will definitely be adding this to my list of things to watch on crime drama night. I appreciate your thorough review.

So glad this is available on Viki! It can be tough to find good Korean dramas with international streaming options. The plot sounds really interesting, especially with the focus on parole hearings. I haven't seen many dramas explore that side of the justice system. Excited to see Go Soo in a new role!

Maybe not the best choice for a family watch night. The whole criminal justice system and loan shark stuff might be a bit too intense for younger viewers. But for adults who enjoy crime thrillers, this sounds like a winner! My husband loves these types of shows, so I'll definitely recommend it to him.

Sounds like a fun popcorn flick! Not looking for anything too deep or emotional, just some good entertainment. Love the idea of an underdog taking on the system. Hopefully, there's some humor mixed in with the suspense. Will check out the trailer to see the vibe before diving in.
