Beacon, a roguelike shooter from developer Monothetic, has reached Early Access stage and is now available on Steam.
Space privateer Freja Akiyama has crashed on a distant planet. To get away, she has to track down her spaceship, which landed on the other side of the planet. It won’t be as simple as following the beacon, however, due to the overabundance of hungry aliens.
Fortunately fate has thrown Freja a few bones. Perhaps someone was there before, but there are discarded items and weapons all over the place — Freja just has to pick one up and use it. She also can’t die…well, kind of. Her weapons allow her to collect the DNA of the slain creatures, and if one of them gets her (which will happen), she can reboot as a clone with mutated DNA, gaining some of that enemy’s abilities.
That’s the unique strategy behind Beacon, and you can try the early version today on Steam. Monothetic will be adding content to the game over the next few months as it reaches completion…you can browse their development plans here.
Beacon follows the journey of space privateer, Freja Akiyama, on her endless search for her crashed ship’s emergency distress beacon. In your search you’ll not only find weapons and items to help you; you’ll also be collecting DNA from the enemies you defeat. When you inevitably die, you’re given the opportunity to integrate the DNA you’ve collected into your genome, allowing you to alter your statistics and gain gameplay-altering physical mutations for your next clone’s life.
