- Memorable Quote: “I heard you went ot Seoul to be a competitive swimmer. Why are you back out of the blue?”
SUMMARY: Two strangers come to a seaside village, one seeking refuge and the other seeking escape. They begin training as traditional haenyeo divers. Through the ocean’s challenges and the community around them, they slowly rediscover purpose, connection, and the courage to move forward.
♦ I Want to be a Diver
“Azure Spring” is about two emotionally burdened individuals who seek refuge in a coastal village and escape the stagnation of their former lives.
- Seo An-Na left her hometown with big dreams of becoming an award-winning swimmer. But that didn’t happen. Now she’s overwhelmed by anxiety and societal expectations, and would like to move forward.
- Yun Deok-Hyeon, an older man, is haunted by past trauma. Diving is a form of therapy for him.
Seo An-Na’s journey begins after a series of personal failures and the collapse of her job prospects. Feeling suffocated by the pressures of urban life in Seoul, she returns to her hometown. She was sort of inspired by Yun Deok-Hyeon and decided to become a haenyeo (a traditional Korean free diver). Who says she absolutely has to be a swimmer?
Yun Deok-Hyeon, on the other hand, arrives in the village carrying the weight of unresolved trauma. Once a man with a stable life, he now seeks solace in the sea. Diving is a way to quiet the memories that haunt him. For him, the ocean is a refuge. For Seo An-Na, it’s an escape from her failures and a way to rebuild her sense of self.
Seo An-Na persuades Yun Deok-Hyeon to teach her how to dive. Yun Deok-Hyeon becomes an unlikely mentor to Seo An-Na, guiding her through the rigorous discipline of diving. As the two begin training together, their bond deepens. What starts as mentorship grows into a connection rooted in shared vulnerability. Romance does emerge, but gently, healing comes first. Both characters are broken in different ways, and both must learn to breathe again, above and below the surface.
Main Characters:
- Seo An-Na (played by Yeri, “Bitch and Rich 1 and 2”)
- Yun Deok-Hyeon (played by Kang Sang-Joon, “Flex X Cop”)
Viewership and Rating:
- IMDb: 7.4 out of 10 stars
- My Drama List: 7.5 out of 10 stars
My personal rating is the same as MDL.
“Azure Spring” is adapted from the webtoon of the same name by Jang Deok-hyun. A slow-burning romance set in a picturesque seaside town. What’s not to like? Add this to your list of this watch list of 8 Korean Dramas That Might Inspire You to Travel to Jeju Island.
NOTE: In case you’re not familiar, traditional haenyeo divers are the legendary free-diving women of Jeju Island. I came to know about them by watching the historical period K-drama “Tamra, the Island”. They are one of Korea’s most remarkable living traditions, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. The word haenyeo (해녀) literally means “sea women.” The Korean drama, “Azure Spring,” is unique because it features a male diver.
