Army of Darkness

Army of Darkness: Furious Road Comic Due Out in Spring

The Evil Dead franchise is enjoying a nice surge as of late. Starz recently premiered a new episode TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead starring the amazing Bruce Campbell as the reluctant Deadite-smashing hero, Ashley “Ash’ Williams. The show was already picked up a second season. On top of that, Dynamite Entertainment looks to ride that wave of momentum with a new comic book series based on the franchise, Army of Darkness: Furious Road.

The new story is written by Nancy A. Collins, which puts Ash 20 years into the future, there the Deadites and the Army of Darkness have succeeded in conquering Western civilization. Species such as vampires, witches and werewolves have formed an uneasy alliance with humanity in order to survive. Now, the only hope for mankind and monsters is to send the Deadites back to hell. However, the crew, including Frankenstein’s Monster and Eva, the Daughter of Dracula, have to track down the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis and deal with its guardian, Ash Williams.

Speaking on the book, Collin stated, “I think Ash’s biggest appeal is that he’s just an Ordinary Joe thrust into some serious Lovecraftian high weirdness. He is doing his best to be a hero, even though he really doesn’t want the job.”

It’s hard to ignore between the title and premise the resemblance to a certain post-apocalyptic sci-fi franchise called Mad Max: Fury Road. It sounds too similar to be a coincidence. Kewber Baal (Jennifer Blood) will serve as the artist for the book. Army of Darkness: Furious Road will also feature variant covers by Tyler Crook, Gabriel Hardman, Francesco Francavilla, and Tony Fleecs. The first issue will hit the shelves on March 2.
