Marvel Studios has finally released the first ever teaser trailer for Ant-Man. The new video, which debuted during the series premiere of Agent Carter on ABC, is available in the player below. Marvel had previously released an amusing “ant-sized” first look at the teaser trailer followed by a full-size version. Now, the full trailer is finally out.
The video showcases an elderly Hank Pym, played by Michael Douglas, recruiting the thief and con artist Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) to become the new Ant-Man. Based on the trailer, the plot looks very reminiscent of 1998’s The Mask of Zorro. That particular film featured the classic, original version of the character, Don Diego de la Vega, as an older man. Don Diego recruits a younger protege to assume his old heroic alter-ego to right a wrong and defeat a villain. He trains the new protege, who in turn falls in love with the original’s daughter. It is pretty clear that Evangeline Lilly will be the love interest for the Scott Lang character. Lilly’s Hope Van Dyne also happens to be the daughter of Hank Pym in the film.
One thing to keep in mind is that the existence of this film means that a more age appropriate Hank Pym will never assume the role of Ant-Man or Giant Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That role will fall upon Scott Lang. In addition, Janet Van Dyne’s Wasp will not exist in the modern day either. However, Lilly’s Hope could very well become a new makeshift version of Janet’s Wasp in the present day timeline.
The incorporation of Scott Lang as the current iteration of Ant-Man, with Hank Pym being an older mentor who used to carry the role, came from the mind of former Ant-Man writer-director Edgar Wright. Wright specifically wanted to adapt Marvel Premiere Issue No. 47, “To Steal an Ant-Man,” his self-proclaimed favorite comic book story. The story was the origin and backstory for Scott Lang in the Ant-Man role. Wright started developing the project as far back as 2006. However, he exited Ant-Man earlier in 2014 right before filming began due to creative differences with Marvel Studios. The production did go on to use versions of his script, but final screenplay credit has not yet been announced.
Ant-Man hits theaters on July 17.
