Amazon has hired Dan Romer to write the music for their upcoming Amazon Prime’s Kevin Soundtrack. They have already released the show’s title track, which Romer performed with Jason Schwartzman.
Keep reading to learn more about the new series, its soundtrack, and when you can watch it.
Dan Romer Scoring the Amazon Prime’s Kevin Soundtrack
We live in strange times. Adults have become the key target for animation, despite Hollywood still treating the art form as kids’ stuff. The mature animation we do get tries too hard to prove its existence with cringeworthy, crude jokes. We rarely get something wholesome.
Amazon is trying to change that with its latest animated comedy, Kevin. Slated to premiere on April 20, 2026, the eight-episode mini-series will tell us the tale of a stray cat from Queens. This cat, Kevin, finds a home at a pet-rescue animal shelter after running away from his owners.
It’s a tale about finding yourself and where you belong, and Amazon is pouring everything into it to ensure its success. For instance, creators Joe Wengert and Aubrey Plaza brought in many big-name actors, including Whoopi Goldberg, John Waters, Aparna Nancherla, Gil Ozeri, and Amy Sedaris.
They even brought in acclaimed composer Dan Romer to write the music for Amazon Prime’s Kevin Soundtrack.
Kevin’s Title Sequence Reveals Dan Romer’s Musical Style and Plans
For film music enthusiasts, Dan Romer needs no introduction. He has already established himself as a competent composer, writing soundtracks for Lilo & Stitch, Luca, Station Eleven, Superman & Lois, Beasts of No Nation, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Maniac, and The Good Doctor, among others.
In each of these examples, Romer created emotion and tension through experimental sounds, inventive musical motifs, layered harmonies, and a willingness to bend genre conventions. We can expect the Kevin soundtrack to be the same.
Kevin’s title sequence shows this nicely.
Jason Schwartzman Joined Romer for “I’m Coming Home”.
Romer penned the song “I’m Coming Home”, which Amazon used as Kevin’s theme song. He also brought in Jason Schwartzman, Kevin’s voice actor, to help write and perform it.
Amazon is so proud of the song that they haven’t posted a trailer yet. Instead, they released the show’s title sequence, which features the song.
Half-minute long, the title sequence follows Kevin on his journey to the animal shelter.
The video begins with a light-blue field revealed to be the sky, as the camera zooms out to show Kevin in an NYC apartment. Then, the walls and floor split apart, startling Kevin before leaving him free-falling through the sky.
After Kevin lands in front of a subway station, he strolls through the neighborhood on his hindlegs. Eventually, he finds himself in front of the shelter after getting smoked by a patron of a hookah lounge. Once there, he accidentally joins the shelter for a photo shoot. Finally, the video ends as the camera flashes onto the title card.
You can watch the Kevin title sequence below for your convenience.
The Song is a Lo-Fi Gem
Because the clip is only half a minute long, we only have access to the song’s chorus. However, those 30 seconds tell us a lot about Romer’s style and direction for Amazon Prime’s Kevin soundtrack.
For instance, “I’m Coming Home” is a lo-fi rock ballad. That means the show and its soundtrack are meant to feel unpolished and personal. It also means that the soundtrack won’t just be a backdrop.
This extends to the singer as well. During an interview, Plaza, Wengert, and Dan Murphy noted that:
“…Jason Schwartzman writing and performing the ’Kevin’ theme could be the most iconic instance of a character singing his own theme song since Frasier poisoned our minds and souls with his tossed salads and scrambled eggs.”
In other words, Kevin, the show’s protagonist, is singing the song. That means we are likely to see other musical skits and moments in the show, as Kevin and his friends express their emotions and fears through song.
This is classic Romer, who uses music to define perspective. Through his music, we witness what cannot be said in dialogue or shown visually, such as the characters’ innermost thoughts and emotions.
Some Details about Amazon Prime’s Kevin
As mentioned before, Joe Wengert and Aubrey Plaza created Amazon Prime’s upcoming Kevin series. The adult-animated comedy is slated to launch on April 20, 2026, with all eight episodes available to stream on Amazon Prime Video at once.
It stars
- Jason Schwartzman as Kevin, our titular housecat
- Aubrey Plaza as Dana, one of Kevin’s owners
- Whoopi Goldberg as Cupcake
- John Waters as Armando
- Aparna Nancherla as Judy, Kevin’s cat roommates at the shelter
- Gil Ozeri as Seth, the shelter’s owner
- Amy Sedaris as Brandi, Seth’s pet dog
According to interviews, Wengert and Plaza based the new show on a true story about a cat who was caught in the middle of a real-life breakup. As a result, Kevin runs away by “breaking up” with his human owners. The story shows how the shelter’s band of misfit animals helps him find himself and what he wants out of life.
Amazon MGM Studios, Titmouse, and Evil Hag Productions produced the show for Amazon with Wengert as the showrunner. Plaza served as the show’s writer.
What We Can Expect from The Show
Since we don’t have a true trailer, we must evaluate the show based on the title song and whatever info Amazon has shared.
That said, everything looks promising. Kevin has a wholesome premise and a decent opening. Also, the cast and crew seem to love what they are doing. So, the show should have a lot of heart as well.
While only time will tell, many critics have already discussed the show’s impact on animation and storytelling.
Most emphasize the show’s strong premise and relatable characters. Others are intrigued by how Romer will integrate the soundtrack into it. Finally, as the premiere approaches, everyone wants to know how the show will surprise and challenge us.
When and Where Can You Watch Amazon Prime’s Kevin
Amazon will stream all eight episodes of its new animated comedy series, Kevin, on their Amazon Prime Video service, starting on April 20, 2026. However, they have yet to reveal a release date for the soundtrack.
Final Thoughts
I love it when studios try something new, and Kevin looks promising. Amazon gave it a cast and crew that know their craft, ensuring that the final product will be at least decent to watch. Romer’s soundtrack should be fun to listen to as well.
