Alien RPG Expands Today With Heart Of Darkness

Free League’s Alien RPG is now larger than ever with a new expansion. Heart of Darkness is a complete stand-alone adventure, written by sci-fi novelist Andrew E.C. Gaska, that continues the plot threads established in the previous expansions Chariot of the Gods and  Destroyer of Worlds.

You and your friends are cast as members of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation who are told they have a new delivery coming. It’s an extraterrestrial life form, one that’s never been studied before. They claim it should be a pretty easy job, just analyze the thing and give them your findings. In return, they’ll reward you with a promotion and even a book deal. This is all assuming nothing goes wrong, but what are the chances of that happening?

The Heart Of Darkness box set comes with these things:

●    The main Heart of Darkness scenario book
●    A double-sided map (864x558mm) of the Erebos plasma trawling space station
●    Seven pre-generated characters to choose from
●    Custom cards for secret messages and personal agendas
●    Player maps and handouts

The game is for three to five players (plus the GM) and the core rulebook or the Starter Set are required to play. Copies are available as of today in the Free League Webshop, as well as digital PDFs of the game at DriveThruRPG.

I enjoyed playing this table top with my friends and this expansion can definitely enhance the experience. I can't wait for the expansion to be released.

Just once was enough to realize how much fun it is. My favorite part is the "cinematic mode," which allows you to create your own mini-story and play it out like you're in an Alien film. Since I played the role of the ship's hidden android, I was responsible for its destruction. It was fantastic. The new scenarios excites me.

I remember having a great time GMing a film-themed scenario. The scenarios are adaptable, so you can keep the tension going no matter how your players respond to a certain situation. The roleplaying hooks provided by the pregenerated characters are excellent. Also, I appreciate the sophistication of the Year Zero calendar. The new features coming looks like something to be stoked for.

I should have waited for an expansion before buying this but I did enjoyed it. In Chariots of the Gods, the aliens are just that. However, I have not played the campaign mode, so it may well be viable with the proper group and GM, and there are plenty of rules in the book to make it work. I'm not fully sure on campaign play because I feel the Alien conceit might wear off after a campaign's worth of play. As a whole, the system is one I can enthusiastically endorse. Let's cross our fingers and hope this next phase is a smashing success.

The scenarios are also well designed, combining the best of narrative play with enough crunch to keep things interesting while still placing an emphasis on player agency and choice; every game I've played or run has had a different outcome, even when using the same scenario, but they've all built from a tense beginning to a satisfying conclusion. This expansion have a lot to live up to after the original base game's success.
