Family Friendly, High-Flying, Farming-Fueled Twist on Bullet Hell Action

Looking for a Bullet Hell game to play with younger siblings or kids? Then this family friendly, top-down shooter Air Hares will send you flying!

Air Hares was made by the power couple developers Tim and Megan Bungeroth. They developed the game out of a want for a Bullet Hell game enjoyable for all ages. Rather than striking down enemies, you instead seed and protect a field of burgeoning life.

Based on the two’s own history of infertility, the game focuses on how science can help when nature falls short. This hopeful story is portrayed through a fun story of highflying rabbits in airplanes. Air Hares tells this through both the game and through the first volume of the Air Hares comic book, which releases alongside the game.

FLYING, FARMING, AND FIGHTING FOR YOUR FIELDS

In Air Hares, you play as Captain Rabbo, a pilot tasked with seeding and protecting carrot fields. He must protect the farmlands from the Gale Gang, a group of Falcons out to doom the land. The cultivation of the fields are vital for the Winrose Barren, and all who reside within it.

To protect the fields, you hop in your play and face down the gang in a top-down, Bullet Hell shooter. Rather than shooting down enemies, your primary goal shooting seeds and water to create truly fertile fields. However, both the weather and Gale Gang will make your job difficult, but you thankfully have some tools to make things easier.

Being an ace pilot, you have a variety of aviation skills at your disposal. From barrel rolling, parrying, and even loop-de-looping, these techniques will keep you safe threats that seek to end your flight early. However, you don’t just have to go at this alone, as a second player can help out as Dirk Doggo, Rabbo’s canine companion, allowing for children and parents to play together to save the Barren.

FEATURES OF THIS FAMILY FRIENDLY BULLET HELL

  • Shooting seeds and water droplets to fill each of 3 carrot fields per level
  • Dodging + parrying falcons intent on knocking Rabbo out of the sky
  • Beating 4 different avian bosses with unique mechanics
  • Teaming up with Dirk Doggo in co-op mode – perfect for playing with kids!
  • Original music, beautiful pixel art, narrative cut scenes, and a story of hope in the face of desolation

Air Hares drops onto the scene in January 14, and is purchasable on Steam. You can also buy a digital copy of the 50-page Air Hare comic, and the original soundtrack on Steam as well. You can discuss the Air Hares on the PopGeeks Video Game Forum!

I like the idea of a bullet hell game that is not only about destroying enemies. I play games with my younger cousin, and most shooters feel too aggressive for kids. The farming system sounds relaxing but still active because you need to dodge attacks and manage the field at the same time. I also think the airplane theme makes it easier for children to understand what is happening on screen. Some people may think this is too soft, but I believe games can still be challenging without focusing on violence. If the controls feel smooth and the difficulty grows slowly, I can see families enjoying it together. I hope the co-op mode is balanced so the second player is not just a helper but has real impact. I will probably check gameplay videos first before buying because bullet hell games sometimes look simple but feel stressful when playing.

I am very drawn to pixel art games, and from the screenshots the colors look soft and friendly. The rabbits in airplanes remind me of older arcade games but with a calmer mood. Music is also important to me, so I am glad there is an original soundtrack available. Many indie games have good gameplay but forget about sound design, so I hope the music changes during boss fights or weather events. Visual clarity is important in bullet hell games, and I hope the projectiles are easy to see without filling the screen too much. Sometimes cute art hides complex gameplay, and I like when developers find that balance. I might buy the soundtrack even if I am unsure about the game itself, because I enjoy supporting artists who put effort into atmosphere.

Look, I’m not usually into wholesome stuff, but this one might convert me. Rabbits piloting planes to save farmland from falcons? That’s just ridiculous enough to work. The shift from killing to cultivating is clever—it keeps the intensity but changes the purpose. Parrying and looping to protect crops instead of scoring points feels fresh. Plus the personal infertility story behind it makes me respect the devs more. Not many couples pour that kind of meaning into a game. I’m curious about boss fights especially. Gonna watch some footage when it drops and probably buy if it plays as good as it reads.

Cute premise, solid execution from what I see. Not every bullet hell needs to be Touhou-level punishing. This one leans cozy while keeping the core dodging and pattern-reading intact. Love that your attacks literally build the stage instead of clearing it. That’s creative. The aviation moves give it personality beyond standard graze-and-shoot. Co-op for families is the cherry on top—most games forget siblings or parents want to play together without one carrying. I’ll wait for launch reviews but it’s looking strong. The barren land recovery theme hits different too.

Finally a bullet hell that doesn’t make me feel like a war criminal lol. The whole “protect the harvest” vibe is so much better than endless enemy waves. Those aviation tricks look fun—parrying falcons mid-loop has to feel amazing when you nail it. Co-op mode is the real winner here though. My son always wants to play with me but he dies in two seconds in most games. This might actually work. Story about hope and science helping nature is nice too. January 14 is marked on my calendar. Hope the price is reasonable for the bundle.
