Since the arrival of Agents of Shield, it was meant to be a way to “connect” to the MCU on a TV level, but it soon became something much more. It was able to tell stories that the big screen couldn’t do, or likely wouldn’t do. It brought in the Inhumans (long before that terrible miniseries), it brought in Life-Model Decoys, it showed the true end to Hydra, and its birth. All the while creating a legacy via its characters. However, its ratings have never been steady or impactful.
In fact, the current 5th season of the show was only given because Disney demanded ABC renew it. But, it’s looking more and more likely that the show won’t continue beyond this season. So, because of that, the team is bracing for the end. How? Well, the Season Finale is being made in a way where it can also be a series finale should it not be picked up.
“Yeah, we’re ready for if this is the end,” Jed Whedon, co-showrunner on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., said in an interview with TVLine. “We’re definitely going to make it rewarding either way.”
That’s very fair, and very smart. And fans of the show should be happy it at least got to finish its story should this be the end, many shows don’t get that honor. And it lasted 5 season and over 100 episodes, that’s nothing to be sad about.
