One of the earliest recurring characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was killed off fairly early on — Agent Phil Coulson of SHIELD, who made appearances in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor and The Avengers before getting killed off in that last one. He was then resurrected in the TV series Agents of SHIELD, but the movie producers don’t consider it canon.
But what’s this we hear — Coulson is coming back! He’ll star in another MCU movie….perhaps his living body is canon after all! …Well, not so fast….he’s going to appear in Captain Marvel, which will be set during the 90s. It’s a flashback.
Because of the period setting, other characters can appear….Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou will reprise Roman the Accuser and Korath the Pursuer respectively, who last appeared in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Captain Marvel will not only have Kree, but Skrulls — the shapeshifting aliens will make their first MCU appearances in this movie. (Perhaps they’ve been here the entire time….)
Having Coulson back is nice, even if it’s through a loophole. But if they really want to blow our minds they should put FitzSimmons in a movie, though at the moment we have no idea if both of them live through the entirety of the TV series.
