Abandoned Street Fighter Characters Include A “Fighting Literary Master”
Street Fighter V director Takayuki Nakayama recently posted some early sketches for new characters in the game, along with explanations for what they would have been like. They are truly bizarre, but it’s not like anybody who made the cut was normal either.
Cower in fear before the Fighting Literary Master (these names were not final). “He’s an old man that constantly grumbles to himself,” says Nakayama.
Thinking a politician might be a good entrant in the Street Fighter tournament, somebody sketched up “Fighting President” here. You can tell he’s the president because of his authoritative hair. According to Nakayama this was not the first time the idea of this character has been pitched — he was also a possibility in Street Fighter IV. He may show up eventually!
This girl’s temp name is “Clumsy Cutie.” Of her Nakayama says, “When this cutie starts fighting, her clothes start becoming more tattered due to her clumsiness.” Need I say more?
The Brazilian man known as “Soccer Fighter” wasn’t cut for being strange, but because he resembled a character in another video game too closely — specifically, Roberto from Rival Schools. “BTW, Roberto was one of my favorite characters!” says Nakayama.
This chunky lass is Miss Babo. She got as far as an official name, and would have had some relation to Laura. “She understood the hardships that Laura had when she was born,” says Nakayama.
Finally, this is “The Teacher.” “An idea that we had when brainstorming ideas for F.A.N.G. At the time we wanted a character that used dark weapons and poison hands. He was a popular choice but wasn’t evil enough, so he got nixed.”
