A Whole Lotta Sonic Is Speeding Our Way
Early this morning Sega streamed out Sonic Central, an eleven-minute presentation announcing every Sonic The Hedgehog-related thing they plan to release over the next twelve months. A list of what would be revealed was leaked a couple days ago, and though it might have gotten a couple things wrong (more on that in a bit), it was overall accurate.
For instance, the list mentioned a remake of Sonic Colors, and that’s exactly what we’re getting. Sonic’s 3D track record has been spotty at best, but Colors (originally released exclusively on the Wii) was one of the better efforts. The plot is that Sonic visits an amusement park in space that turns out to be an elaborate scheme by Dr. Eggman to enslave a cosmic race called the Wisps — and “that’s no good.” The most important thing about Colors is it leaves out all the unnecessary extra elements with other characters and just lets you RUN. The new version will be called Sonic Coors Ultimate, and it will be accompanied by a two-part animated special released online. Look for it September 7.
Over the last few years Sega has been slowly remastering the original Genesis Sonic games in widescreen and releasing them one at a time. Soon they will be combined as one in Sonic Origins for Playstation, Switch and XBox. It’ll have Sonic 1, 2, CD and, for the first time in a long time, Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Did they get the music rights worked out or have they simply composed a new score? We don’t know yet. The rumor stated Knuckles Chaotix (a spinoff that has never been re-released since its debut on the 32X) would also be in this bundle, but unless it’s a secret unlockable, that appears to be false info. The compilation is coming out in 2022.
Other things Sonic is appearing in:
Sega has the license to produce an official Tokyo 2020 video game, and you can dress your character in a silly Sonic costume (see splash pic)
The arcade game Sonic The Fighters (released only in Japan in its original form) will be playable at the Sega Arcade in Lost Judgment
You’ll be able to watch the Sonic Symphony Orchestra (with special guest Crush 40) for free during a special stream in June
The next animated series, Sonic Prime, is still in development at Netflix with Man of Action in charge
Sonic will be in Minecraft at some point
A mysterious new Sonic game is in development for 2022
As big as 2021 will be for Sonic (it is his 30th birthday and all), 2022 looks to be even bigger. He’s not slowing down anytime soon, but why would he?
