It’s been over two years since Netflix last tossed us a season of The Witcher, and it didn’t leave things on a confident note. The show had once been one of the brightest shining stars in the streamer’s lineup, but then multiple things happened: fans found the new season lackluster on several levels, the animated spinoffs didn’t gain traction, and most damaging of all, Henry Cavill left the show.
The announcement came before the release of Season 3, and Netflix had to run a campaign that said “Yes, Cavill is still the lead” to avoid any dips in ratings (didn’t help). How can you have The Witcher without The Witcher? All depends upon whether replacement Liam Hemsworth can sell the same swagger.
With only a month and a half to go before the show returns, the answer couldn’t be held off any longer. Today Netflix released the first public clip of Hemswitcher in action. It’s about a minute of him fighting a wraith. At first he tries swinging his sword, only to realize that’s not effective against a ghost (it perhaps took him a bit too long to realize this). Luckily Hemswitcher DOES know the proper way to dispatch of a wraith and I definitely did not see it coming. It’s very Mortal Kombat.
As for what else could happen, I got bad news: it’s a lot of solo arcs. “After the Continent-altering events of Season Three, Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri find themselves separated by a raging war and countless enemies. As their paths diverge, and their goals sharpen, they stumble on unexpected allies eager to join their journeys. And if they can accept these found families, they just might have a chance at reuniting for good…” Though Season 3 was carved in half, Netflix will not be doing the same this time, delivering all eight episodes in one dump.
Even if Season 4 improves over Season 3, rhey’ve already committed to ending this show after Season 5, so…if you like it, try not to like it too much. The Witcher returns October 30.
