About a decade ago people were telling me I had to start watching this new True Detective show on HBO. “It’s the best show ever!” they told me. My slow self didn’t even start to consider it until Season 2 was already a thing, at which point people were NOW telling me “don’t bother, it’s garbage now.” I thought I’d just never hear about True Detective anymore, but now that it’s made it all the way to Season 4, people are telling me to watch it again? Make up your minds!
Yes, I’m aware each season of True Detective is different. It’s an anthology show with a completely new cast each time. Apparently they managed to hit a home run again with the combo of showrunner Issa López and actress Jodie Foster in “Night Country” (what the fourth season is subtitled). So much so that López has been asked to come back to run the show’s fifth season, which was announced today.
“From conception to release, Night Country has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life,” López is quoted as saying. “HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of True Detective with Casey, Francesca and the whole team is a dream come true. I can’t wait to go again.”
“Issa Lopez is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit,” boasts Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO Programming. “She helmed ‘True Detective: Night Country’ from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera. Alongside Jodie and Kali’s impeccable performances, she’s made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family.”
The fourth season of True Detective wrapped up last Sunday, February 18 and all seasons, including the bad ones, are streamable on Max.
