SUMMARY: After a devastating betrayal and wrongful accusation shatter her life, Bong Sun-Hwa vows revenge by entering the world of the powerful family that destroyed her. Her determination is relentless, but falling in love was unexpected.
“The Second Husband” is about Bong Sun-Hwa. Her life was never perfect, but she thought she had finally found love and happiness with Moon Sang-Hyeok, her longtime boyfriend. They even had a baby. But everything unravels when Moon Sang-Hyeok betrays and abandons Bong Sun-Hwa and their child for a wealthy heiress, Yoon Jae-kyung. Moon Sang-Hyeok aimed for wealth and status by marrying Yoon Jae-kyung, the ambitious daughter of a powerful confectionery conglomerate family.
Bong Sun-Hwa’s troubles don’t stop with the betrayal. Her situation in life rapidly changes from bad to worse. She is falsely accused of murder, sent to prison, and separated from her newborn son. Growing up, her life had been difficult. Rather than falling apart because she had been betrayed and falsely accused, she resolves to make “them” pay! She had never been a pampered princess, and you know what they say? What don’t kill you, makes you stronger!
Bong Sun-Hwa vows to get revenge. After serving time, she forges a new identity and works to build a new life. She rises up in the confectionery world, eventually meeting a nice young man named Yoon Jae-Min. What do you know? It’s a small world. He’s Yoon Jae-Kyung’s stepbrother, and he becomes her ally and love interest. Not just a love interest, he marries her and … the plot thickens. Imagine being at the table with her sister-in-law, who married her rotten, scheming, two-timing Ex, her child’s father.
And … that’s not all. Some people have a lot of nerve! Moon Sang-Hyeok, her Ex, is jealous of Bong Sun-Hwa’s real love and happiness. Furthermore, his wife, Yoon Jae-kyung, is also jealous. Unlike Bong Sun-Hwa, she is a pampered princess who is very insecure. She can’t stand that her stepbrother’s legitimate wife is loved, happy, and successful. Yoon Jae-kyung works hard at trying to sabotage everything related to Bong Sun-Hwa.
Bong Sun-Hwa is now a part of a world dominated by wealth, influence, and intricate family politics. There are family secrets, rivalry, corporate power struggles, and on and on and on. The best part of this makjang genre K-drama is Bong Sun-Hwa’s evolution from victim to empowered woman.
My personal rating is the same as the Viki viewers.
“The Second Husband” was originally scheduled for 120 episodes. “Makjang” is a Korean drama term that describes a very specific, wonderfully chaotic storytelling style. Absurd plot twists, villains with no chill, high emotional stakes, over-the-top coincidences, etc., etc., etc. Even though the K-drama had a typical soap opera plot, it was extended to 150 episodes because of its popularity.
