The Running Mates: Human Rights – You’re Human, You Have Rights

-

“The Running Mates: Human Rights” is a 2019 Korean drama, 14 episodes, categorized as Legal Drama and Mystery, and streaming on The Roku Channel. Based on the 2015 novel “Running Investigators”.

SUMMARY: Human rights must be defended regardless of circumstances. Human rights violations are never justified.

♦ Welcome To HRECK. We‘re Here to Help.

In “The Running Mates: Human Rights”, the HRECK (Human Rights Enhancement Commission of Korea) team helps out people who are in need of protection and secures their human rights.

A special investigative unit tasked with defending the rights of ordinary people whose voices have been ignored or suppressed. The two lawyers who must work together have polar opposite personalities, and their approach to handling cases often clash.

His arrival shakes up the team’s existing dynamic.

To his credit, Bae Hong-Tae is righteous and HOT! Whereas Han Yoon-Seo is righteous but COLD. Nevertheless, they must learn to work together, and they do! They work through their clashes, philosophical and practical. As their working relationship grows, their “differences” become “complements”. Han Yoon-Seo’s methodical attention to evidence blends with Bae Hong-Tae’s instinctive passion for people’s well-being. Each case tests both their professional skills and personal moral compasses.

♦ Who You Gonna Call?

Many take human rights for granted until a violation occurs. Then the individual who has been wronged realizes their rights were not protected. Where do they turn? HRECK (Human Rights Enhancement Commission of Korea). Cases involve workplace harassment complaints to investigations of excessive force. The investigations show how hard-working individuals are stripped of their basic human rights. It also shows how fearless advocates can catalyze positive change so that egregious human rights violations don’t recur.

Viewership and Rating:

My personal rating is the same 8.5 out of 10 stars.

“The Running Mates: Human Rights” is a hidden gem streaming on The Roku Channel. Surprisingly, this streaming platform has quite a few hidden K-drama gems, all free with ads. If you enjoy K-dramas with social justice themes, add this to your watch list. It is a standout among Korean legal dramas that tackle societal issues. Each episode presents a new real-world-inspired case.

You might also enjoy the drama if you are a fan of the actress Lee Yo-Won. She has won several awards, and her filmography dates back to 1998. Ms. Lee has even appeared in music videos. Forbes included her name in their 2010 list of “Korea Power Celebrity 40” (the Korean version of the ‘Highest-paid Celebrity 100’, published every year by Forbes in the United States).
