If you are to believe global superstar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, the future of the DC Universe on film will be much more fun than the past. The Rock wrote on his social media accounts about meeting with DC Entertainment. According to The Rock, he’s gotten a sense of “tonal shifts and developments” for upcoming DC movies that has him very exciting. He added the following terms: “Hope, optimism & FUN.”
Whether this actually happens and turns out to be true or not remains to be seen. For years, The Rock has been attached to play Black Adam in a planned Shazam movie based on the DC Comics. That’s currently still in the works. In full, Johnson wrote the following:
Had a very cool and strategic meeting with the heads of DC about their entire universe. As a hard core DC fan, to get a real sense of the tonal shifts and developments coming in these future movies has me fired up. Something we, as DC fans have all been waiting for for a very long time. Hope, optimism & FUN. Even when talking about the the most ruthless villain/anti-hero of all time finally coming to life. Prepare yourselves DC Universe.
The Shazam movie currently doesn’t have a release date. It doesn’t even have a director or star attached to play Shazam (aka he was previously known as Captain Marvel in the DC Comics). Another actor would also be necessary to play his boy youth alter-ego in Billy Batson.
A lot of the complaints for the previous DC movies is that they were way too dark and serious, especially where characters like Superman were concerned. Whether these tonal shifts will pay off remains to be seen. The next DC film release is Wonder Woman, due out on June 2. Justice League will arrive on November 17.
