It’s official. Jon Bernthal will star in his own TV series as Frank Castle aka The Punisher on Netflix. There had already been rumors that a TV show starring Bernthal was in development, but now Marvel Entertainment has made it official. Netflix has given Marvel’s The Punisher a full first season order, which usually means 13 episodes.
Jon Bernthal will return in the show as The Punisher, coming off a highly praised performance in the second season of Marvel’s Daredevil TV series on Netflix. Steve Lightfoot will serve as executive producer and showrunner for the upcoming show and also write the first two episodes of the series.
Speaking on the announcement, executive producer and Marvel’s Head of TV Jeph Loeb commented: “We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from ‘Marvel’s Daredevil.’ Now combined with Showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing, we’re thrilled to bring ‘Marvel’s The Punisher’ to Netflix.”
Showrunner Steve Lightfoot added: “For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world. After watching Jon’s performance in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own.”
This will be the sixth show for the Marvel and Netflix Collaboration. It’s hard to foresee when the show will launch. Luke Cage’s first season will debut on Netflix on September 30. Iron Fist is currently in production and will likely debut next year. The Defenders will likely have to be next up on the plate. With that in mind, 2018 will probably be the earliest that The Punisher show will debut.
It will be interesting to see what direction The Punisher show goes in and what characters from the comics will be a part of the story. Also, will The Punisher work with Microchip? All the episodes of the first season of The Punisher TV series will debut on Netflix at launch.
