SUMMARY: Set in the late Joseon Dynasty, the lives of three people collide at the Gyeonggang River, one of the most important rivers in the country. Once a symbol of beauty and purity, the river became known for corruption, greed, and lawlessness.
In “The Murky Stream”, many laborers come to the Gyeonggang River in the Mapo District every day, hoping to find work and hoping to get paid for their hard work. Jang Shi-yool is one of those laborers. He doesn’t say much, and people don’t try to mess with him. If they ever do, they find out that he’s incredibly strong and could easily break one or two of their limbs. Who would hire a laborer with a broken leg or an arm? Jang Shi-yool shows up faithfully like all the other men for work. They all work hard, and at the end of the day, instead of getting paid, they get an earful of excuses about why they can’t get paid.
One day, merchants showed up. They needed their cargo unloaded from a ship, and the laborers handled the goods. But at the end of the day, they were not paid. That was the last straw. Jang Shi-yool told his bosses that if he found out they were lying and cheating them out of their pay, he wasn’t going to stand for it. What he didn’t know was that he was working around a group of bandits, and they were cheating the laborers out of their wages.
Jang Shi-yool chased after the merchant he saw at the dock and ended up at their place of business. Choi Eun has just been made the leader of the merchant group by her father. Jang Shi-yool confronted her directly and demanded his wages. Choi Eun knew she was a woman in a man’s world, but she wasn’t about to be pushed around or bullied by anyone. She stood her ground firmly and told Jang Shi-yool that his bosses had been paid. But she doesn’t know why the laborers were not paid, and she’s not going to pay again!
Jang Shi-yool could not prove who was lying – the merchant group or his bosses. So he left. Angry, but peacefully. After he left, Choi Eun questioned one of the men who worked for her. He assured her that if there had been any “cheating”, it wasn’t the merchants. Between the bandits and the greedy government officers, the corruption was rampant. Jang Shi-yool didn’t know it, but he had taught Choi Eun a valuable lesson on how to handle her business dealings in the future.
Meanwhile, he left and went into the district. He had no work to do, so he just sat quietly on the side of the street. Government officers were coming through riding on their horses. People moved out of their way and lowered their heads as a sign of respect. Jang Shi-yool stood up and also lowered his head. But one of the officers stopped his horse and got off. He walked up to Jang Shi-yool and called his name. When Jang Shi-yool lifted his head, he was looking into the eyes of a dear friend. This big, strong man, who could carry heavy loads and break an attacker’s limbs with ease, started crying like a small child.
The government officer’s name was Jung Cheon. The officer said, “You rascal! I thought you were dead”. Then he hugged Jang Shi-yool like they were brothers or dear friends who were even closer than brothers. Jung Cheon had recently been assigned to the Mapo District. Even though he already knew the officers he worked with were as lawless as the bandits, he intended to be righteous and just. Choi Eun was standing quietly on the other side of the street observing their interaction. How odd. A government officer embracing a common laborer with such affection and looking each other in the eye as equals. In that moment, the paths of these three (3) people had become intertwined.
My personal rating is 9 out of 10 stars.
